Take the Challenge

The Houston Tomorrow Department of Transportation New Bus Network Challenge will take you on an adventure around Houston on Metro's new frequent bus network. Follow the trail of clues to complete the challenge and you'll win a shirt, a hat, and support HTDOT's work to bring balanced, safe transportation to Houston.

And the first ten people to finish win a free bus pass.

This Saturday night at midnight Houston will still be running a 1960s bus network, like most major cities. However at 3am on Sunday morning Houston's Metro will launch an entirely new 2015 bus network to match the region that Houston has become and connect a million jobs to a million homes.

Riding the bus will be free all week long for everyone, so you need to go out and try out the new frequent network. Houston Tomorrow decided it was time for a challenge, basically a fun run where you ride the frequent bus to five locations around town to show you how far you can go and how close Houston has become.

Starting Monday morning at 9 am, you can pick up your introduction packet and your first clue at our offices at 3015 Richmond, Suite 201. Come by any time between 9 am and 5 pm Monday - Friday, August 17 - 21 and complete the challenge by the end of the night, Saturday, August 22.

To fully complete the challenge and support the Houston Tomorrow Department of Transportation, set up your challenge page here. Everyone who donates or raises at least $100 becomes a member of HTDOT and get a shirt. If you both raise $100 and complete the challenge, you will also get a limited edition baseball cap.

The first ten people to fully complete the challenge will receive a bonus transit pass provided by Metro so that you can ride the frequent network for free for a little longer.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Houston Tomorrow Department of Transportation?
Houston Tomorrow is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to improving the quality of life for all the people of the Houston region. For almost 17 years, we have worked to provide analysis, ideas, and forums for discussion to help Houstonians be more engaged and effective in planning our future. Transportation issues have always been central to our work. We are working now to raise funds to establish HTDOT as a permanent fixture at Houston Tomorrow working for all the people of the Houston region to push for Complete Streets, more transit funding, better transit, Complete Multimodal Neighborhoods, and to legalize walkable urbanism.

What is this whole New Bus Network thing all about?
Metro has been going through the Transit System Reimagining process for the last couple of years to completely rethink the local bus network to serve more people and provide better service. The New Bus Network will launch Sunday morning, including a network of frequent bus lines where you can expect a bus every 15 minutes. All of this was done without substantially changing Metro's local bus budget. This is being hailed across the country as a triumph. Houstonians will reap the benefits. This blog post has links to all the things you need to know to understand what's going on.

Is Houston Tomorrow providing transportation?
No, this Challenge is all about encouraging you to try out Metro's New Bus Network. Houston Tomorrow is NOT providing or arranging whatever method of transportation you choose to use to complete the challenge.

What if I don't want to raise any money? Can I still take the challenge?
Yes, we strongly encourage you to get out there and try out the New Bus Network. Also, we encourage everyone to share your experiences with the hashtags #NBN and #NewBusNetwork. You can still come to our office and pick up the first card and go to all the stops, even if you can't support Houston Tomorrow at this time.

What if I can't take the challenge, but want to support Houston Tomorrow?
This campaign is set up like a fun run, where each person taking the challenge will set up their own donation page here. You could support Jay's or Alex's campaign or support others taking the challenge, shown on the main campaign page.
