Montessori Moment
Montessori: Service Learning

Being citizens of the world is an important part of our Montessori Community, and service learning is a wonderful avenue for them to get involved.  Service learning allows students immediate opportunities to apply classroom learning to support local agencies that exist to effect positive change in the community.

The picture above is a group of our current faculty and students as well as alumni and parents who assisted in the clean-up after the Holiday Parade.

Upper Elementary has also recently made a decision on one service learning project they would like to do for the community. While brainstorming several ideas in the classroom last week, one suggestion was to donate to Wood Lane in some form.  After hearing the presentation by Miss Kasey and seeing her sons ‘gift’ from an everyday hero, it was decided upon by the students to create sensory quilts for Wood Lane.  They have begun to create a sensory quilt for each of the five classrooms at Wood Lane.

This is a sensory quilt made for Miss Kasey's son, RJ, by his everyday hero, Grandma Julie.

Kroger Rewards-
3rd Payment has arrived!

For those of you participating in the Kroger Rewards program, the 3rd  quarterly payment has arrived!  Due to privacy concerns, Kroger no longer provides individual card detail to the school with the payment.  However, each of you can log in to your Kroger account online and print out the benefit that was paid on your behalf.  If you then turn in this statement to the school office, we will credit your tuition account for that amount.  Be sure to have any of your friends and family that signed their cards up with Montessori as their charity to print out their statements as well.    We will need all statements turned in to the office no later than Wednesday, December 18, 2013.  After that time, any remaining benefit will be donated to the CAPE parent association and the school scholarship fund.

We have exciting news about Chess! Starting in January, the K-7th grade Chess Club will offer Beginner and Intermediate/Advanced groups that will last for much of the semester! Registration comes with a t-shirt. There will be optional matches if a more advanced student wishes to participate.

CLICK HERE for the registration form.

Chess has long been regarded as a game that can have beneficial effects on learning and development, especially when it is played from a young age. Below are some of the most critical benefits that chess can provide to a child:
  • Develop analytical, synthetic and decision-making skills, which they can transfer to real life.

  • Learn to engage in deep and thorough chess research which will help them build their confidence in their ability to do academic research.

  • Help children gain insights into the nature of competition which will help them in any competitive endeavor.

  • When youngsters play chess they must call upon higher-order thinking skills, analyze actions and consequences, and visualize future possibilities.

  • In countries where chess is offered widely in schools, students exhibit excellence in the ability to recognize complex patterns and consequently excel in math and science.
