Holiday Traditions and Customs

St. Lucia Day
Nora Engebretsen-Broman and her children, Isabelle and Eric, along with some helpers, presented to the school about St. Lucia Day. St Lucia Day on December 13 ranks among the most important days on the Swedish calendar. It honors a young Christian girl, martyred in ancient Rome, who is always portrayed with her head encircled by a halo of lights. Though it's not officially part of Advent, for many Swedes Lucia Day forms the gateway to the Christmas season.

Kwanzaa
Myron Ruffin, Ahmir's dad, organized a presentation about Kwanzaa. Alumni parent Jeff Halsey, as well as other musicians, assisted in the presentation. Kwanzaa is a week-long celebration held in the United States (and more recently, Canada) but also celebrated in the Western African Diaspora. The celebration honors African heritage in African-American culture, and is observed from December 26 to January 1, culminating in a feast and gift-giving.  It is ideological, with seven core principles (Nguzo Saba): Unity, self-determination, collective work and responsibility, cooperative economics, purpose, creativity, and faith. It was created by Maulana Karenga, and was first celebrated in 1966–67.

Hanukkah
Erin Labbie and her daughter Sophia presented about Hanukkah. Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is an eight-day Jewish holiday commemorating the rededication of the Holy Temple (the Second Temple) in Jerusalem at the time of the Maccabean Revolt of the 2nd century BCE. Hanukkah is observed for eight nights and days, starting on the 25th day of Kislev according to the Hebrew calendar. This year, Hanukkah begins at sunset on December 8 and ends at sunset on December 16.

Chinese New Year
Man Zhang will be presenting about the traditions of the Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year starts with the New Moon on the first day of the new year and ends on the full moon 15 days later. The 15th day of the new year is called the Lantern Festival, which is celebrated at night with lantern displays and children carrying lanterns in a parade.
