Montessori: Upper Elementary Simulations

A pillar of the Upper Elementary program is for students to participate in historical simulations. These simulations provide them opportunties to authentically learn about time periods and think critically while they collaborate in decision-making.

Right now, the Upper class is doing the Pioneer Simulation. In the pioneer simulation, students will simulate events similar to those experienced during the mid-1800’s.  They will face challenges such as floods, droughts, and lack of food.  They will make group decisions about what to do when faced with a challenge.  Their decisions will determine their fate.  This provides students with a realistic view of what happened to the pioneers while expanding westward.

Students will also:

  • write diary entries
  • take notes
  • make collaborative decisions
  • gain conceptual history knowledge
  • learn problem solving strategies
  • work on the 5W’s (who, what, where, when and why)
  • teamwork
  • gain an appreciation for the pioneers life

Please ask your child about what they are learning in history!

Each student had to determine which supplies they might like to bring with them on their wagon.  The wagon can hold 1,000 bulk weight units (BWU’s).

There were big dreams for the pioneers moving west!

TONIGHT: Capture the Flag in the Dark

Friday May 9, 2014 at 8:30 pm
MSBG Soccer Field

Calling all MSBG 3rd through 7th graders. Come join the fun and play Capture the Flag with a dark twist: We’ll play at night, wearing glow bands and using glow in the dark flags. Dress in black clothing and bring a flashlight if you’d like. Glow bands will be provided.

After the games, we’ll make s’mores by the fire pit!

* Parents: Please plan to stay. And bring lawn chairs, if you’d like, for watching the games!
* We are looking for a parent volunteer to referee the games. Please note that If anyone is willing, school parent, Pam Phillips would be grateful if he or she would email her at pphillianda@yahoo.com

CAPE Officer Nominations

Next week we will take nominations to CAPE officer positions for next year—including nominations for the Class Representative position. We'll have official Class Reps in all classrooms next year. Look for the CAPE Nominations jar in the foyer and nominate anyone (including yourself!) whom you'd like to see in a CAPE leadership position. Wonder what the positions entail? Click here.  Everyone is also invited to our next CAPE meeting, Tuesday, May 13, at 6:30, in the foyer. We will discuss next year's events, leadership, and how to spend our money!

CAPE and the faculty, staff, and students extend an enthusiastic thank-you to all the parents who made CAPE events and special classroom activities happen this year. MSBG relies on volunteers to produce the extra-curricular social events that help build our sense of community, and to raise the funds to make those events possible. The school really would not be the place it is if not for the volunteer contributions of parents. So thank you, parents, for all the extra time, money, and care you invest here!

What to Expect June 5!
Due to calamity make-up days, June 5 is a regularly scheduled school day, with before care beginning at 7:15am and aftercare running until 5:30pm. This year, we decided that with the help of CAPE, we will combine some Spring Carnival elements within our community celebration.

The day will look like this:
8:30-11:15 Regular Morning
11:15 All-school assembly
11:30 Picnic lunch on the grounds
12:15 Recess while carnival games are set up
1:00–3:00 Carnival games, inflatables, and a scavenger hunt
3:00 Resume regular day’s routine—pick up and after care as usual

**parents are welcome to join us for the assembly, the picnic lunch, and any help with the games would be fantastic!

Board Nominations

We are currently seeking recommendations for potential new members of our MSBG Board of Directors. Parents and friends of MSBG are very helpful in reaching out to potential volunteers so we are seeking your recommendations. Generally we are looking for individuals who are involved in the community or who have experience with nonprofits.  Mostly we want individuals who will be passionate about MSBG! Please let us know of any individuals in the Bowling Green area who you would recommend. They do not have to be directly connected to MSBG. If you have any questions, please contact the school office. Click HERE for the printable form. Click HERE for the online submission form.

Library Update
Special thanks to our library committee (Meg Vostal, Erin Hachtel, Jason Wells-Jensen, and Ruth Schroeder) who worked diligently this semester identifying the needs and resolving issues with our school library. We are currently seeking a 2014-15 librarian ($500 stipend).  The position would be approximately 10+ hours/week and would involve general support of the library as well as media support for the classrooms.  If you are interested in serving in this way, please drop a note to office@montessorischoolbg.org.
