From the Lower Elementary Classroom this week:
Hands-On Learning about Teeth

After learning the functions of the digestive system, our next focus in science is on teeth. The health of our teeth, which helps break down foods, is important to learn about at a young age. Miss Shelby, our student teacher, asked the students what they know about teeth and what they want to learn about teeth. Available on our shelves, the students can explore information about our mouths, the parts of a tooth, the four kinds of teeth we have and much more. Next week, Dr. Downey's office will be visiting our classroom and sharing with us the appropriate way to brush and take care of our teeth.

Daffodil Days

This year Upper Elementary is excited to be helping again with Daffodil Days as a student service learning project! Daffodil Days is a program to help raise money for the American Cancer Society. The money we raise goes towards cancer research and treatment.
Here is how you can help:
Starting on Monday, February 4th, and ending February 13th, we will have a table set up in the lobby to collect donations.  A teacher and a student will be available from 8:20-8:50am. We will be selling bouquets of 10 daffodils for $10.00. We are also selling teddy bears  for $25.00, potted mini daffodils for $12.00 and, a vase of daffodils for $15.00. There will be a Wall of Hope where you can donate $1.00 to get your name on the wall; that money also goes to cancer research and treatment.

Thank you to school mom, Karmen Concannon, for her help with this project.

Thank you for your generous donations,
Mary Grace, Alexa, Laney and the rest of the Upper Elementary students

Change in Office Staffing
Job Opening

Debbie Nabinger has accepted another position and will be resigning effective the end of this week.  Her message is below.

If you or anyone you know may be interested in this afternoon Administrative Assistant position, please submit a resume and cover letter.

From Debbie:

I wanted to take a moment to let you know that I am leaving my position at Montessori. I will be starting a new full time position this next Monday working in photography, marketing and advertising.

I have enjoyed my time here and I appreciate having had the opportunity to work with all of you. Thank you for the support, guidance, and encouragement you have provided me during my time at Montessori.  Even though I will miss my colleagues and the company, I am looking forward to this new challenge and to starting a new phase of my career.

Thanks again for everything.

Yours truly,

Debbie

Board Nominations

We are currently seeking recommendations for potential new members of our MSBG Board of Directors. Parents and friends of MSBG are very helpful in reaching out to potential volunteers so we are seeking your recommendations. Generally we are looking for individuals who are involved in the community or who have experience with nonprofits. We are especially looking for someone with fundraising and development expertise. Mostly we want individuals who will be passionate about MSBG! Please let us know of any individuals in the Bowling Green area who you would recommend. They do not have to be directly connected to MSBG. If you have any questions, please contact the school office. Click HERE for the printable form. Click HERE for the online submission form.

PTO Survey

PTO needs your input on the Spring Fundraiser!

We have a lot of great options for the Spring Fundraiser this year! Some are local businesses and new catalog options, while others will provide us with the great products from previous fundraisers. We need your vote as to what YOU would like to sell, buy or provide as a gift. Don’t forget, the items received in the Spring Fundraiser will be delivered in time for Mother’s Day! You may vote for your top THREE choices. The profit is noted in parentheses.

*If you have any questions about any of these businesses, or their products, please contact Kate Balusik.*

Miss Susan's Music Update

Finger Plays and Body Awareness Activities
These are very simple but necessary activities, and they are thoroughly enjoyed by young children.  Dexterity is required for many school, athletic, and instrumental music activities, but a child’s fingers are one of the last things of which s/he gains control. Naming various parts of the body and exploring how they move help your child develop coordination and control, resulting in your child’s ability to engage in purposeful, directed movement rather than reflexive movements.
Children enjoy the rhythmic quality of the verses such as Wee Willie Winkie and tend to repeat them over and over, reaping the additional benefit of listening to their own voices.  Movement and language are closely allied neurologically, and these simple activities nurture both the development of inner speech and impulse control.  Impulse control is when the child’s language center is developed enough to allow a verbal cue to override a movement cue, permitting a child to stop on command once s/he is already moving.  Inner speech is the development that keeps a child from saying every thought that pops into his/her head.  It plays a big role in a person’s reasoning ability.  As you undoubtedly know, most young children do not possess either impulse control or inner speech, but they are both necessary for future success in just about every possible arena; so anything we can do to help with this development is well-worth it!

School Safety
MSBG maintains a high level of safety and security and believes that the safety of our students, staff and community are of the utmost importance. We partner with local fire, police, health and city departments to ensure all procedures and plans are properly recorded and drills are conducted on a routine basis. We regularly provide staff instruction in all safety procedures to ensure everyone is properly trained.  All visitors to our school should report to the office when they arrive and can ring the doorbell to obtain entrance.  If you see someone at the door you do not know, please allow the office staff to buzz them in or if they are in the building, feel free to ask if you could help them or guide them to the office. As always, please feel free to share with us any concerns you may have.
Save on Taxes

Please remember that "daycare" is a deductible expense. Since Bowling Green City Schools only offers ½ day (2.5 hrs) kindergarten, full day students at MSBG (6.5 hrs) can count 4.0 hrs as daycare (meaning 61.53% of their tuition is tax deductable); half day students can count 100% of their tuition as daycare as long as they attend a BG school the other ½ day. All extended care (any age) and all preschool tuition is also tax deductable. Please email Leigh Ann McKinney, our Business Manager, if you need a childcare credit expense report. She will need a two-week turnaround.
