Montessori Moment

"Work" instead of "Play"

“Play is the Child’s Work” is perhaps Maria Montessori’s best-known aphorism. Unfortunately, this phrase is often misinterpreted to suggest that work and play are identical and that children should be working, not playing. But that is really not what Dr. Montessori had in mind. Montessori wrote, for example, that children might well use their imagination to think about a distant country like America, rather than a fairy tale land. In so doing she recognized that imagination or play was not the same as work. Montessori also appreciated that learning is most effective when play and work are united in a single activity. To appreciate this insight, we need to be clear about the difference between play and work. Click HERE for Dr. David Elkind, PhD's full article.

School Picture Day

Hello, Parents!  As many of you visit the library after school with your children, please note that as part of the effort to expand the library's offerings, a new section of Young Adult Fiction has been added to the shelves.  This section is confined to the shelf at the end of the Fiction section, adjacent to the wall.  These books are marked with pink or red color coding labels, and are labeled "MM" (More Mature), "YA FIC" (Young Adult Fiction), or simply "FIC" (Fiction).  A uniform labeling system is planned for the future.  While many of these books may be appeal to our younger students, please use your own judgment in helping your child make a selection.  Miss Rachel wants the library to offer something to all students, but with such a range in age and interests, there may be cases where additional guidance from parents is required.  Thanks and see you in the library!

Welcome New Staff

1st, we welcome Kayla Thompson to after care!  She will begin Monday and will work with our elementary after care program.  Kayla is in her sophomore year at BGSU and is studying inclusive early childhood education.  Kayla is from the Youngstown area and has had a variety of work experience.  She has worked in retail, worked with children in summer camp and provided child care to twin boys for several years as well as coached elementary girls basketball.  We are excited to have Kayla on our extended care team!
2nd, we welcome Donna Fogarty to our administrative team!  Donna will be serving as our 3rd, part time administrative assistant in the front office.  Donna is mom to Dec and Mac and began this past Tuesday, working 8:30-2:00 M-F.  Donna holds her Bachelor of Science degree in accounting and has been a tax preparer and a bookkeeper and has plenty of customer service experience.  With our growing population, we are thrilled to have someone with Donna's experience to help with our ever-growing word load in the front office!

MSBG Alumni are
Global Citizens

Several of our alumni did international service trips this summer. The Sentinel Tribune ran an article about some of them. One MSBG alum, Isaac Rogers said this, â€œParticipating in the trip to Guatemala changes one’s perspective on many things. It changes your outlook on capitalism, the poor and even on your fellow classmates. It’s scary at first going into a city garbage dump where people live and you don’t even speak the language. But you learn quickly,” shared Rogers. CLICK HERE for the full article.
