Hi <<First Name>>,
Visual models like base-10 blocks have traditionally been used to introduce place value concepts. Sometimes it is both quicker and easier to digitally show certain concepts.
The Place Value tool in Flare
shows ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands and assists students in developing a mental picture for tenths, hundredths, and even thousandths.
Access the Place Value tool by selecting Flare
from the Slate
channel list, then choose Place Value from the titles drop down.
The short video below demonstrates a way to quickly show how blocks can be regrouped (composed and decomposed) by dragging and dropping into the relevant columns.

A deep understanding of these places and their relation to each other is further strengthened with connections to place value charts and the use of symbols on a numeral expander. You can opt to display a numeral expander below the table in the Place Value tool to reinforce the understanding.
If you are unsure if the Flare tool is included in your Slate subscription, please ask your school's mathematics administrator. For more information and to purchase please click here or contact your local Resource Advisor.
