January 2023

Happy New Year!

I loved the opportunity to represent you during my first year in office. Last year was filled with many amazing memories. I will always remember the moments I got to share with you as we improved our neighborhood together. I was elected by my peers to serve as Salt Lake City Council Vice Chair, and I look forward to working with you to improve our community even more this upcoming year.

If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!

Thank you,

Council Member Victoria Petro

Salt Lake City’s New Water Reclamation Facility

Salt Lake City Department of Public Utilities recently gave me a tour of the new Water Reclamation Facility currently under construction. The new facility will meet all the new federal and state requirements and replace the current facility which is nearly 55 years old and approaching the end of its useful life.

The new Water Reclamation Facility was designed and built as a model project; it is highly sustainable, offers educational aspects for the public, and was constructed to the highest environmental standards. Pre-planning and sustainable efforts have already saved millions of dollars on the facility.

A benefit I am especially excited about will help with something we have become all too familiar with here in District One – the smell! Instead of using open drying beds, the new facility will be enclosed with clean air scrubbers to reduce the smell of treatment.

Did you know the current treatment facility has achieved 28 years of peak performance awards of compliance? Only eight other facilities in the country have reached this achievement.

What is the Council Doing?

In case you missed it...

Last month, the Council:

  • Adopted a resolution supporting Mayor Mendenhall naming the Salt Lake City Justice Court Building the “John L. Baxter Justice Court.” Judge Baxter gave dedicated and compassionate service to Salt Lake City for more than 20 years.
  • Recognized Council Member Dan Dugan for his service as the 2022 Council Chair.
  • Approved a fourth amendment to the City’s FY23 budget.

What's Next?

Fleet Block Rezone

The Council is reviewing a proposal from the Mayor’s Administration to create a new zone (Form-Based Urban Neighborhood 3 or FB-UN3) and whether to apply that new zone to the 10-acre city block located between 300 and 400 West and 800 and 900 South, also known as the Fleet Block. The area was previously used by Salt Lake City as a fleet maintenance facility.
