Graph showing decreasing funding for buses since 2010

Buses are in Crisis

Hello Stephen

I don't need to tell you how worrying this graph is. Funding for buses across England and Wales has been cut by 33% since 2010 - terrible news for communities and for the environment. But there is hope.

The figures come from our new Buses in Crisis research. We made over 100 Freedom of Information requests to local councils to get a full picture of recent bus cuts. We found that bus funding has been cut by nearly £30 million in just the last year, during which time over 500 routes have been reduced or completely withdrawn.

The impact on people young and old can be devastating, as Delilah and John explain.

Michael Palin"It makes it hard for young people like me to find a job when we live in a rural area and can't afford to run a car" - Delilah Gardner, bus user
Michael Palin"Many elderly people need buses to maintain their independence. If villages are cut off, as is happening, elderly people will be more and more isolated" - John Marshall, bus user

But despite this bleak picture, I have real hope for the future. A Bus Services Bill is currently going through Parliament. This will make it easier for local authorities to plan their bus services to really meet the needs of people in their area. And with just a few changes, the Bill could be even better:

  • We want ALL local authorities to have the full range of powers in the Bill, not just those areas with an elected mayor. This change would benefit rural areas, where bus services sorely need protection.
  • We want to see an Investment Strategy for buses. Rail, roads, cycling and walking all have a Government investment strategy: buses desperately need one too.

Our successes, 2016

With your help, we've done all this...

Sadly this will be the last e-bulletin I write to you Stephen, as I am leaving Campaign for Better Transport later this month. Thank you for all your support - here's an infographic showing some of our successes over the past year. From helping to save ancient moorland to improving compensation for rail passengers whose trains are delayed, we couldn't have done it without you!

All the very best

James
