October 2016 - Bido Lito! Issue 71

Liverpool's rightful place as a certified Music City is evidenced in the great events heading to Merseyside this October. We've got them covered in issue 71 of Bido Lito!

LIMF Academy is developing a reputation of gestating some fantastic talent. Producer SUEDEBROWN is the latest diamond to graduate through the ranks. We speak to him ahead of his Red Bull Music Academy tour date in the city. There's also interviews with Mersey Wylie in relation to her new album and SoulFest slot. We caught up with local songstress Natalie McCool regarding the release of her new album. We also celebrate the romance of the humble cassette ahead of Cassette Store Day and the romance of live music with SoFar Sounds

SUEDEBROWN

Blending grime, hip hop, RnB, soul and rap into dazzling electronic soundscapes, producer and DJ SUEDEBROWN eludes the uniformity of lacklustre landfill electronic music that tends to dominate present-day airwaves. Selected along with Eleanor Nelly and L U M E N as one of the Academy’s ‘Most Ready’ artists for 2016, his trajectory has shot upwards, Bethany Garrett caught up with the artist also known as Paris Harding ahead of his upcoming Red Bull Music Academy Tour outing with SG Lewis and Jamie Woon, on home turf.

SUEDEBROWN: "It’s an exciting time for people making electronic music. With your computer you don’t need a band, but you can still experiment with a lot of different RnB sounds"

SOFAR SOUND

Starting back in 2009, SOFAR SOUND founders and live music lovers Rafe and Rocky began to get frustrated with audiences constantly talking over bands. In retaliation, they decided to start hosting gigs in their own houses, inviting friends over to watch. The popularity of the event spiralled, causing a global movement, with 300 secret gigs a month taking place in hidden, unique venues all over the world. Scott Smith spoke to some of the people involved in the movement.

Tadgh Daly: “It seems to me that these nights somewhat transcend the usual ‘performer/audience’ relationships and you get to see people’s raw reactions to the music.”

LIQUIDATION

LIQUIDATION, the long-running Liverpool club night is resuming its weekly operations in the newly-refurbished EBGBS, the subterranean pleasure den beneath Heebie Jeebies. After 23 years entertaining Saturday night indie disco revellers in various venues, Liquidation has defied so many trends in music and night time habits to actually go from strength to strength, and it’s all down to a little bit of magic.

The much-loved club night relaunches 17th September and Bido Lito! will be getting in on the action with a takeover night on 8th October. We're inviting PURE JOY and THE MYSTERINES and BIDO LITO! DJs will be manning the desks.
