Joy To The World! It's Birkenhead's Psychedelic Saviours

We're over the water in Birkenhead for this months cover feature. Matthew Hogarth caught up with Wirral dreamweavers PURE JOY ahead of the release of their debut album. The quartet have been beavering away in their custom studio producing something truly special in Bang Flower. They talked to us about their hopes for the record, the recording process and how they are taking their sound on the road.

"We were extremely ambitious with the sound of the album and didn't feel that being a three-piece should hold that back."

Hail, Dudeism! The Music Of The Coen Brothers

We continue our occasional series on great movie directors' use of soundtracks in issue 65. This month, our resident film fanatic Del Pike looks at the work of the COEN BROTHERS and their collaboration with Carter Burwell and T Bone Burnett. As the brothers behind classics such as The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou and Fargo return with Hail, Caesar we analyse the secrets behind their soundtrack success.

"Carter Burwell has worked on nearly all of the Coen's films and Hail, Caesar! can perhaps be seen as a culmination, almost a greatest hits, of his previous collaborations."

Every Day Is Record Store Day!

April is the month of RECORD STORE DAY, an occasion which has gathered it's fair share of detractors as well as advocates in recent years. We enlisted our friends at two great vinyl institutions - Piccadilly Records and Sonic Cathedral - to weigh up the pros and cons of RSD. Top lensman Keith Ainsworth also took his trusty Nikon around the regions waxy treasure troves to mark the event.

Read our RSD feature and see the lens gallery in Bido #65.
Feature Preview: Serious Sam Barrett

Bold Street Coffee welcomes Yorkshire troubadour SERIOUS SAM BARRETT this month. The folkster is launching new album Sometimes You Got To Lose as well as an exhibition of works by illustrator Sami Graystone which runs in the city's caffeine capital throughout April. Bido Lito!'s Glyn Akroyd caught up with Barrett and talked skateboarding, influences and his love for Liverpool.

Serious Sam Barrett: "The English, Scottish and Irish traditions all have their own unique styles and I love them all. But there has always been a lot of crossing over between them, and they have a lot in common. I love the way American traditional music draws on all of them but also heavily on African folk music."
