House Eliminates Funding for Popular Sexual Risk Avoidance Education (SRAE) Programs
July 27, 2022

Despite overwhelming demand from parents, schools, and students across the country, funding designated for implementation of SRAE programs, which empower youth to avoid sexual risk, has been eliminated by the Departments of Labor, Health and Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2023.

“It is more than ill-advised that in a time of growing concern over the targeted sexualization of youth through inappropriate, explicit, and ideologically charged sex education, funding for SRAE programs has been removed. Now more than ever, youth need accurate information about healthy sexual development and clear guidance on how to make sound, informed decisions, develop healthy relationships, avoid sexual risk, and pursue goals for a successful future,” said Mary Anne Mosack, President & CEO of Ascend.

It is crucial that Members of Congress provide funding that allows for choice in sex and relationship education approaches. American parents, students, and schools need more than a single, ideologically one-sided, taxpayer-funded option, especially when that option mandates controversial messages about sex and gender that are at odds with community and school standards, the wishes of parents, and science.

For the sake of all youth, it is time for Congress to rise above partisan politics and prioritize the critical needs of young people to receive evidence-based information about healthy sexual development as they journey toward productive adulthood.

Ascend equips and unites the national Sexual Risk Avoidance (SRA) field to help youth make healthy choices about sex, relationships, and marriage with an approach to sex education based on primary prevention, an established public health model used to promote wellness and eliminate risk.
