<<Name:>>,

A couple months ago, I had the pleasure of speaking to the Business Babes Society, a networking group comprised of ambitious women entrepreneurs, from residential realtors to beauty consultants, from web designers to pet groomers, from... (Well, you get the idea!)

As it turns out, Rachelle Kemp (the group's current president) is an Image Consultant with a desire to set up a new home office , reorganize her business, and increase her productivity! So... having long been intrigued by the image consulting industry and desperately in need of updating my wardrobe, I decided to trade services with Rachelle. Needless to say, we are both anxious to reach the finish lines of our respective marathons!

Have you ever tried such a thing? Bartering is a win-win for everyone! In fact, if you have a service or product that you think I could use (such as marketing, lawn mowing, or freezer meal preparation), give me a call... and get ready to get organized!

closet organization

Having moved several times over the years, I have had a variety of different sizes of closets (and clothes, for that matter!). From reach-in to walk-in closets, the trick has always been setting up a functional organizing system to fit both the available space and my wardrobe.

The bedrooms of our first home in Michigan touted 5-foot wide reach-in closets with double bi-fold doors, a single closet rod, and a solitary wooden shelf. As one of our first home improvement projects, we removed all closet doors and installed the ClosetMaid ShelfTrack organizing system (that I customized to suit our needs) in 2 of the 3 bedrooms. (The third bedroom was used as an office, so the closet simply served as a home for our two-drawer filing cabinet and a stackable wooden shelving unit full of office supplies.)

When planning your own closet organizing system, you'll want to do an inventory of your wardrobe to determine how much long hanging, double hanging, and shelving space you need. Personally, I own but a handful of long hanging items (i.e., dresses, robes, coats), so I reserved a meager 12 inches of long hanging space and used the remainder for floor-to-ceiling shelves and double hanging space (see photo below).

Closet Organizing System

Since I only have a few basic pairs of shoes, I like to keep them near the entry door in a shoe storage cabinet. You'll want to do the same for those you wear every day. If you have a large collection, however, you may want to include some shoe shelves at the bottom of your closet for additional storage. Clear plastic bins are ideal for storing infrequently worn shoes.

When we relocated to Kentucky, our first rental home in Georgetown boasted a large walk-in closet in the master bedroom. Our entire wardrobe did not even fill the space! It worked out perfectly, though, as I was able to store our laundry sorter (one of my favorite finds ever) right inside the closet (which is where we changed clothes anyway). Doing so helped keep our clothes up off the floor at all times (whether they were clean or dirty)!

A few other favorites include: slim heavy-duty plastic hangers with hooks for keeping clothes and their coordinating accessories together, collapsible fabric bins (of all different sizes) for storing smaller items and intimates, closet shelf dividers for keeping your stacks of clothes separated and maximizing your shelf space, and different sizes of hooks for storing belts and hats on the empty walls of your closet (as pictured above).
