Quarterly Newsletter Fall 2016

Pacific Northwest Newfoundland Club

"Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole."

by Roger Caras (photographer & writer)
Presidents Message:
November is here, and so is Fall weather. Remember, the rain we are getting down here in the valley is snow in the mountains, which is fun for Newfies to enjoy! (Though we are not looking forward to much snow down here.) As we move into late fall and winter, many people are preparing for upcoming shows. The big one for PNNC is our regional specialty held in January. Jeannette Voss will be sending out more information and asking for volunteers. Your help is always needed. As we enter the holiday season there will be many tempting things for your Newfie to enjoy. Just remember a little chocolate may not bother your 150 lb. friend, but more than that may be poisonous, so be careful where you put the chocolates!

PNNC officer elections are coming soon. Please send back your marked ballot as soon as you receive it. There is not an electoral college that will make the final decision, so each and every individual vote counts.

I hope you have a great holiday season. 2017 will be here before your know it.

Happy Newf Holidays

Pete Forgey
PNNC President

PNNC Water Test 2016

Despite a very rainy and stormy Saturday, September 17, the sun came back on Sunday, September 18 at Horseshoe Lake Park in Woodland , WA.  Not rain nor shine could stop our amazing dogs and handlers, or keep the spectators away. Larry Roe thoughtfully made a warm fire, and with great food and company, you couldn’t help but enjoy the weekend. Despite the inclement weather on Saturday we had three new WD qualifiers and one WRD qualifier. Sunday proved to be another successful day with one WD qualifier and two WRD qualifiers.  Title or not every team did a phenomenal job.. Thank you to all our stewards and volunteers for making it a wonderful weekend, and to our judges, John Pearson, Lori Littleford, and Edie Koster for their exceptional expertise and judging. Please enjoy the beautiful pictures, provided by Amanda Buse,,  of our PNNC Water Test 2016 Qualifiers.

Book Reviews
By Jeannette Voss

Campbell, Colin.  Free Days with George: Learning Life’s Little Lessons From One Very Big Dog.  This is a memoir, telling the story of the author, who had recently gone through a divorce, deciding to adopt a dog, and ending up with a young Landseer Newfoundland who had been abused and was in a rescue foster home.  He re-named the dog George, and this book is about his journey with George, as they “save” each other.  You don’t get to the author adopting George until about page 50, but after that it’s a very enjoyable read about his journey with George.  There are nice color photographs, and the very best part is that by the end of the book, George is still alive and well and living a happy life!

Adams, Maureen.  Shaggy Muses:The Dogs who inspired Virginia Wolf, Emily Dickinson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Edith Wharton, Emily Bronte.  Essentially a collection of short biographies about these five woman writers and their dogs.  The classic literature we have read, learned in school, or heard about, written by the five women writers takes on a much simpler and sweeter message after reading this book. Behind each great writing there was in mind and probably under foot a beloved dog, as was the case with Emily Dickinson and her brown Newfoundland, Carlo. it is ant easy and quick read, with a tender yet powerfuly sentimental note.(Random House Publishing Group, 2009)

IBook Review
by Elise DeChaine Ghiglieri

Horowitz, Alexandria.  Inside of a Dog:  What Dogs See, Smell, and Know.   This is one of my very favorite books on canine behavior, communication, and understanding, which I have read and resourced many times over. Author,  Alexandria Horowitz, an animal behaviorist, cognitive psychologist, and director of the Horowitz Dog Cognition Lab at Barnard University in New York shares her years of experience, expertise, and research about the science behind the how's and why's of dog behavior, which is explained by examining how a dog perceives the world.  Namely through the nose, mouth, and ears  It is the down to earth true love and devotion for dogs which Horowitz reflects in her writing that change a very scientific and  researched based book  into a fun and enjoyable read.  Without a doubt you will see your dog and their behavior in a very different way and new understanding,.  Which can easily be applied during training and activities, plus the fun of being just a little more connected to your dog.. (Scribner September 2010)
"Are You Prepared?"
"Are you prepared?" is a question we are all probably familiar with, whether or not we have chosen to answer.  Since our pets are without a voice during an emergency being prepared might not only save a pets life, but give you one last thing to worry about during an emergency.  Click on the button below for a downloadable Emergency Pet Preparedness form.  One part of the question "Are you prepared?" can honestly email answered.
