UNDERCURRENTS
NEW ARTWORK BY MARTIN HSU AND LAWRENCE YANG
OCTOBER 15 - NOVEMBER 16

Currents are the source of life and death. What lies beneath the surface is unseen and often forgotten, but it’s also where much light and magic can be found. This series of paintings explores the color, vibrancy, and luminosity of the deep.

Martin Hsu is an artist and designer based in San Francisco. He takes much inspiration from nature, animals, and Hayao Miyazaki. The series of paintings he created for Undercurrents is based on the concept of life arising from death. It’s also infused with his fascination for vibrant and fantastical creatures from the deep.

Lawrence Yang wrestles with informational abstractions by day and paints by night. Influenced by graffiti art and traditional Chinese painting, he employs ink, marker, and watercolor, as the permanence of this media adds a sense of immediacy to his work. Lawrence’s paintings make use of color to communicate atmosphere and emotion, and they are concerned primarily with creating order out of chaos (and vice versa).
Artwork is now available for
online purchase.

  FILM REVIEW: THE ARTIST
By ERIC NAKAMURA
A special thank you to the attendees of last weekend's reception. Great times and fun photos of the Bay Area artists.

After seeing The Artist, a movie at HIFF, which is a tribute to the silent film era but with a modern flair, I can say the trailer doesn’t give the film justice.

BOOK REVIEW: THE BUDDHA IN THE ATTIC
By ED LIN
Tad Suzuki shreds and is the subject of an indie and awesome short film/sponsor-me video that is slated to premiere at this weekend’s International Skateboard Film Festival in Los Angeles.

Julie Otsuka’s second novel is a quiet and disquieting story of the Issei. Written in the first-person plural from the point of view of the picture brides who become wives and then mothers.

After 25 years of Karate Kid, Tamlyn Tomita is one of the several judges at the Hawai'i International Film Festival (HIFF).   The thick and luxuriously-printed-but-fairly-priced hardcover book Occupants collects many of the photos taken by Rollins over 25 years of traveling.

A collection of some of Martin Hsu's favorite paintings from the past few years. It's not only a collection of ideas, but a peek into the artist's twisted painted world.
