As part of WRDA's Health Lobbying Project in partnership with Botanic Pharmacy and funded by Building the Community Pharmacists Project, our Training and Development team hosted a Pre-Christmas MOT event on 25/11/15 . We welcomed specialists from Cancer Focus NI, The Heart Project and the BHSCT to provide a series of health checks and advice to our community facilitators and members.

WRDA Host Member's Event

WRDA held an event for members on 8th December.  Derek Baker, Permanent Secretary of DEL in charge of Departmental Restructuring was in attendance.

Derek provided us with an update on the Government’s Departmental Restructuring currently taking place. The restructuring was initiated by the Stormont House Agreement, point 60 in the Agreement states that:  A reduction in the number of departments from twelve to nine should be made in time for the 2016 Assembly election, with the new allocation of departmental functions to be agreed by the parties.
Details of the new departments and where functions are going is available here.

Lobbying Update

Women's Sector Lobbyist, Ellen Finlay, has been hard at work over the past month to ensure that women’s issues and views are effectively positioned and communicated to politicians and policy makers.

Ellen is currently working towards pulling together the new Women's Manifesto. We are hoping to have it ready by the New Year. Watch this space for further details.

November/December have yet again been another busy few months for lobbying. Ellen met with various MLA's, policy officers and civil servants to ensure women's issues are a priority on decisions made.

Further details of her latest work can be found here.

WRDA Attends Sexual Violence Seminar

On Tuesday 24th November, WRDA intern, Diane Izabiliza, attended the “sexual violence” seminar at Women’s Information Northern Ireland, in Belfast. The seminar was held by members of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The seminar was a mixture of input, knowledge sharing and experience exchange, between the participants and the leaders of the seminar. Many issues were discussed, the context of sexual violence in NI, the impact of sexual violence, the needs of the victim and the barriers to seeking help.
During the discussion it was highlighted that the post conflict situation in NI is a major issue when it comes to sexual or domestic violence. In all cases of domestic violence it was obvious that this traumatic experience has a negative impact for the whole family and community.   The seminar ended with a discussion on the topic of victim’s needs and how to move on.
