WRDA attends Glencree's "1916 and the Ethics of Memory" event

On Saturday 27th June, WRDA Director Anne McVicker attended a conference titled ‘1916 and the Ethics of Memory’ in the Glencree Centre for Peace & Reconciliation in Wicklow. The background to the conference was 1916 and the centenary events and celebrations which are presently being rolled out across Ireland.

In his address, President Michael D Higgins highlighted pertinent issues such as the accuracy of ‘narratives’ and the forgotten voices of 1916, particularly women, children, victims and pacifists.
The President’s input was informative and thought-provoking, and set the scene for a panel discussion chaired by Olivia O’Leary with Onora O’Neill and Dr Johnston Mc Master, followed by workshops in the afternoon covering areas such as more inclusive forms of commemoration.
