Rock GardenSince this month is the month of lawns and gardens, we hope to do our part by planting useful information in each and every one of you. With each of our monthly newsletters, we try to impart some knowledge to you that helps you grow both healthier and wiser. Thank you so much for allowing us to share with you the wisdom we have gained through years of work and personal experience.

Like many others, we are still working through the impact of last months terrible tragedy in Japan. Iodine: The Multi-Purpose Nutrient

Iodine DropFor many in the past month, this is the first time you’ve heard of iodine as anything other than part of a first aid kit. When it comes to mainstream medicine, this is certainly not a commonly prescribed or even suggested remedy despite its vital role in the human body. So, you may be surprised to learn that iodine plays a crucial part in hormone regulation… which in turn is responsible for something many of us struggle with daily.

How many of you have tried to lose weight -- feel like you have done all the right things -- but still have nothing to show for it?  I know it sounds hard to believe, but your problem might just be due to a hidden nutritional deficiency. That’s right: Iodine. And in today’s environment it’s nearly impossible for your body to get sufficient amounts let alone hold on to it.

In addition, Dr. Guy Abraham, one of the world’s foremost experts on iodine, discovered that you most likely need to take 100 to 400 times the RDA to keep your body in balance.  The fact is that iodine does a lot more than assist in losing weight.  More than 90% of us are low in iodine.  Dr. David Brownstein, who has written books on the subject, is convinced that whole body iodine insufficiency is the cause of numerous health problems ranging from hypothyroidism to fibromyalgia.

Iodine is more commonly recognized for its role in thyroid function, but it’s responsible for so much more.  This simple nutrient is utilized throughout the entire body and assists in normalizing a number of biological functions.  It is found in breast tissue, ovaries, testes, parotid glands, and salivary glands.

ShowerWater containing halogens such as chlorine, fluoride, and bromine, utilized internally or externally , interferes with iodine molecules and causes your body to excrete the iodine it so desperately needs.  Since chlorine exists in most city water supplies, unless you dechlorinate your water, you are exposed to thyroid-lowering gases whenever you bathe, shower, or have a drink of water.  For those of you who have a hot tub or whirlpool spa, you most likely use chlorine or bromine, which both affect you in the same way.

It might also interest you to know that many soda drinks contain bromide in the form of brominated vegetable oils.  Although, manufacturers say the amount is negligible, some practitioners have observed that drinking sodas with bromide generated low thyroid function in some of their patients.

Here is a brief list of critical functions iodine is responsible for throughout the body:

- Normalizes hormone receptors.  These receptors need to have iodine attached to them for optimal function.  A shortage of iodine, and your hormones do not work at their peak.

- Regulates the thyroid.  Your thyroid gland needs iodine whether it is working normally, underactive, overactive or enlarged.

- Diminishes fibromyalgia in people with low thyroid function.  This could be because an overabundance of bromide often displaces iodine.  Since iodine removes bromide from the body, the fibromyalgia is improved.

- Breast protection.  When bromide gets into breast tissue, it displaces iodine, which is critical for breast health.  Some women with fibrocystic breast tissue find their cysts and tenderness disappear after using iodine.

- Supports the adrenal glands and stress.  Our adrenal glands require sufficient iodine to function properly and counter life’s many stresses.

- Assists in generating HCI in our stomach.  Low hydrochloric acid production is often caused by iodine insufficiency.  Without enough HCI, we cannot digest protein, or use calcium, magnesium or iron efficiently.

Homemade Energy Bars

Never thought of making your own energy bars? Well, these are easy to make, delicious, raw, organic, dairy/ gluten-free and packed with nutrients... what else could you want?Energy Bars

4 Medjool Dates
1 Tbsp Almond Butter
1 Tbsp Almond Meal
1 Tbsp Coconut Flour
1 Tbsp Flax Meal
1 Tbsp Shelled Hemp Seeds
1 Tbsp Sunflower Seeds
1 tsp Chia Seeds
1 tsp Bee Pollen
1 tsp Carob Powder

The best way to make these (on a small scale) is to wash your hands and start kneading the ingredients together to form a uniform dough. Once you have that completed, roll the dough into a cylindrical shape about 3 inches long and use a rolling pin to complete the job. Then, simply cut in half and voilà!

*This is a taster recipe that yields two energy bars that measure roughly 4.5”L X 1.75”W X .5”H. Once you see how yummy they are, you can multiply the ingredients on a massive scale and store your bars in the freezer for safe keeping. Feel free to email me for the nutrition facts.

Our products with a twist from the not-so-mad scientist...

I think at some point in their young lives, every child likes to play the "mad scientist" – mixing various concoctions together to form some imaginary (yet highly magical) potion. Now that we’re adults, we’re much too *ahem* mature to indulge in these types of frivolities. However, if you still have the urge to satiate this craving, there are much more practical and useful applications that won’t have people looking at you askew.

Here are some simple ways to "magically enhance" our great products:

Is our Ancient Minerals Magnesium Lotion a bit too boring for your sophisticated olfactory palette?
- Try adding a few drops of Aura Cacia’s Love Potion – a well rounded, delicious blend of citrus, cardamom, vetiver, ylang ylang, sandalwood, jasmine and patchouli oils.

Trying to avoid toxic bug repellents and deet this season?
- Try adding some essential oil of Citronella to a bottle of your Ancient Minerals Magnesium Oil or Lotion. Relax those hiking muscles while repelling bothersome bugs!

Want to get a deeper penetrating sports massage?
- Add a few drops of essential oil of Camphor to your Ancient Minerals Magnesium Gel or Lotion.

Can’t get your kids to take their Edible Earth?
- Try adding a teaspoon of organic carob powder to the mix – a delicious chocolaty taste without the caffeine!

Prescription Drugs: White Knight or Pale Horse?

It’s the end of your day and you’re sitting down watching your favorite program which is routinely interrupted by a long, bothersome stream of commercials -- unhealthy snack foods and sugary beverages followed by prescription drug commercials telling you to “ask your doctor about _____”.

After being bombarded with pharmaceutical ads for so long, it’s become almost comical as you listen to the ailments the drug supposedly helps being followed up by a long, grizzly list of side-effects that seem much worse in comparison. Miracle drugs for blood pressure, erectile dysfunction, allergies, insomnia… we’ve heard them all.

Side Effects

What’s the trade-off for getting rid of allergies these days? Side effects include: irritability, loss of sleep, sore throat, stomach pain, anxiety, aggression, depression, obsessive behavior, panic attacks, swelling… wait a minute, swelling?! So, in other words, you’ll be a sleep deprived, mood swinging, rage-aholic with swelling who-knows-where, but at least your allergies won’t be bothering you. Personally, I can’t wait to be allergy free so that I can stomp around unhindered in my fatigued haze of paranoid delirium. Sounds like a blast!

On a much more serious note, these side effects often encompass much more detrimental consequences, few of which make it onto the label let alone out of the pharmacist’s mouth as they walk you through the mandatory instructory drug spiel.

For brevity’s sake, let’s focus on a very crucial mineral whose loss could be potentially fatal if not severely life altering. Magnesium’s role in human biology is so significant that a deficiency can lead to anything from depression, anxiety, insomnia, eczema, and headaches, to more serious things like diabetes, osteoporosis, Alzheimer’s and heart failure. Although many studies still debate the chicken-or-the-egg scenario, claiming effect rather than affect, the issue still remains that a substantial amount of the ailments that would benefit from magnesium intake, are in actuality being treated with drugs that deplete magnesium and ultimately exacerbate the underlying problem.  

Cortisone ShotCase in point, magnesium is a powerful anti-inflammatory nutrient, providing your body with something it hungers for to naturally decrease inflammation, no side effects need apply. However, the most prescribed anti-inflammatory medications (corticosteroids) are among the list of magnesium depleting drugs, and not only come with an eye-popping gauntlet of risks but potential withdrawal symptoms as well.

The reality is that the majority of medical doctors have no training in nutrition whatsoever, since it's not an educational requirement. Because of this, many of them fail to see the correlation between disease and nutrient intake (or lack thereof). If you've ever had the misfortune to eat hospital food, you're probably familiar with this major oversight.

This is about the time we can thank our lucky stars for the internet, and the ability to research medications and their side effects on our own. But the real question is -- should we have to? And at what point do we trade the painful side effects of a makeshift solution, for the overall well-being provided by nutrients that are biological necessities?

This is just one more reason to make sure that you are eating healthy, exercising regularly, supplementing accordingly and, of course, making sure that you are getting adequate magnesium!

Q&A FROM OUR CUSTOMERS

QACan I apply the Magnetic Clay as a topical acne remedy?

Yes, actually we have heard quite a few customers report that they've had great success using the clay in that capacity.

To accomplish this you would simply follow our clay pack instructions, except add less clay to allow for a more creamy mixture. Although you will still want to apply a heavy coating, this mixture will make it easier to apply to your face as a mask. Try to keep the applied mask moist for as long as possible, since that is what ultimately maintains the mobility between skin and clay. Make sure to wash your face (or other skin surface) after you rinse off the clay.

Can I use the Nascent Iodine sublingually?

Although we've had customers use our iodine sublingually in the past, either because of their own supplementation beliefs or personal preferences, this is not how we recommend you use our form of iodine.

There are a few reasons for that, but the main one is that iodine is known for it's capacity to stain. So, using undiluted Nascent Iodine sublingually will eventually cause your teeth to turn various shades of yellow.

For most people, that's a good enough reason to use as directed!
