Can Artificial Intelligence Accelerate Universal Health Coverage in Developing Countries?

Johannesburg - Dec 5 - RSVP Now
The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly being used in high income country settings, in many different sectors.

Within the health sector deep learning AI systems can identify eye diseases and diagnose Alzheimer's better than doctors, and improve cancer treatment plans, among many other applications. But are these approaches applicable in low resourced health systems in developing countries?

Many LMIC countries are already using various technologies to increase access to care, often when access to health workers is limited. However, the potential of artificial intelligence is, at this stage, unclear, at a time when countries are being urged to accelerate progress towards Universal Health Coverage.

We need to ask ourselves:
  • Who is innovating in AI for healthcare and what are they learning?
  • What are applicable artificial intelligence use cases for LMIC health systems?
  • Can AI offer meaningful results in under-resourced settings?
  • Are there easier, cheaper alternatives that can accelerate UHC faster than investments in AI?
Please RSVP now to join the next Technology Salon South Africa that will bring together technologists and development professionals to explore how we can accelerate Universal Health Coverage in LMICs with artificial intelligence. RSVP is required for participation.

Our lively, in-person conversation will be guided by lead discussants, including: Please RSVP now to join them and your peers in an intimate and informal debate where your ideas, opinions, and participation is actively encouraged.
