How Did New Outreach Tools Increase Public Participation in USA Elections?

Technology Salon
Online Worldwide - Nov 17 - RSVP Now
Communications technology applications are now interwoven with our democracy and present new problems and opportunities.
Problems are evident in social media firms acting as information filters and arbiters of truth, most recently highlighted in Netflix’s popular show, “Social Dilemma.” To their credit, Facebook and Twitter have taken action to try and curb conspiracy theories and the deliberate spread of misinformation. Is this enough?
Even with the pandemic in full swing, Resistbot and Swing Left leveraged technology in new and innovative ways to enable more people to advocate for particular causes and demand accurate information in the USA election. #WalktheVote and South Asians or Biden used technology to make organizing within communities and families easier.

Together, their tools helped citizens participate in more ways than ever, including using their own technology to reach fellow voters in every battleground state and taking steps to curb nefarious inaccuracies.
Please RSVP Now to join us for a discussion about the ways new technological tools were used during this election cycle, and what it means for the future of advocacy in elections everywhere. We’ll seek answers to questions like:
  • How are new technologies making it easier or harder for everyday Americans to become involved in election advocacy?
  • Do the lessons learned from conducting advocacy remotely due to the pandemic suggest a fundamental change to the practice in future elections?
  • Can firms with business models that incentivize increases in engagement and audience attention and AI ever be trusted in democratic elections?
Please RSVP Now to join your peers and these thought leaders in a robust virtual discussion moderated by Joshua Reiman of the San Francisco Bay Area Technology Salon. This virtual Technology Salon will break from our usual in-person format and be a fully virtual event. Yet, online space is limited to foster intimate conversations, so please RSVP now and be sure to note the relevance in your application to attend. Once we reach our discussion capacity there will be a waiting list!

About the Technology Salon

The Technology Salon™ is an intimate, informal, and in person, discussion between information and communication technology experts and international development professionals, with a focus on both:
  • technology's impact on donor-sponsored technical assistance delivery, and
  • private enterprise driven economic development, facilitated by technology.
Our meetings are lively conversations, not boring presentations. Attendance is capped at 35 people - and frank participation with ideas, opinions, and predictions is actively encouraged.

It's also a great opportunity to meet others motivated to employ technology to solve vexing development problems. Join us today!
