How to Implement ICT4D in Fragile, Violent, and Conflict-Affected Regions?

Tech Salon DC
Washington, DC - June 26 - RSVP Now
Currently, over two billion people worldwide live in fragile, violent and conflict-affected (FCV) environments. Furthermore, according to the World Bank, the share of the extreme poor living in conflict-affected situations is expected to rise above 50% by 2030.

FCV environments dramatically impact development outcomes as conflicts drive 80% of all humanitarian needs - yet it is very difficult to operate within these contexts.

Could technology be a vector for change? For instance, over 83% of adults in Somalia use mobile money and in neighboring Kenya, mobile money lifted 2% of households out of poverty. However, mobile money use in Somalia is complicated by a lack of structure, regulatory gaps, and competing interests.

We now have the opportunity to access the $11million Creating Hope in Conflict Humanitarian Grand Challenge to help us develop and deploy groundbreaking solutions to improve the lives of vulnerable people affected by conflict. How could investments like this change the current ICT in FCV paradigm?

Please RSVP now to join the next technology Salon DC to explore the role of digital development in fragile, violent, and conflict-affected environments. We'll seek answers to questions like:
  • What are the critical success factors to increase impact?
  • What are our obligations to do no (additional) harm?
  • How do we strike a balance between accountability and innovation?
  • Who do we need to engage when operating within these contexts?
  • How can digital tools strengthen service delivery?
  • Where can ICT empower citizens' interactions with their governments?
  • How can we successfully navigate competing interests on-the-ground?
  • Is sustainability really achievable in such an ever-changing landscape?
Please RSVP now to join your peers and these thought leaders to unpack the harsh realities of working in this space: We’ll have coffee and snacks for a morning rush, but seating is limited. Please RSVP Now. Once we reach our 35-person capacity there will be a waiting list!
