Let Us Discuss Results from a Randomized Control Trial of OLPC in Peru

In 2007, Peru announced it would distribute tens of thousands of XO laptops from One Laptop Per Child to children in rural schools across the country, and expanded the program every year since. Almost 1 million laptops later, the program is now the largest XO deployment in the world and one of the most faithful to OLPC's deployment guidelines.OLPC in Peru
  • But what has it achieved?
  • How can we learn from it?
  • And where could we replicate its success?
At the next Technology Salon, we'll take a deep dive into OLPC in Peru with the Inter-American Development Bank. The IDB is conducting a multi-year randomized evaluation of the impact of the OLPC project in Peru - the first rigorous attempt to examine the impact of the largest "1-to-1 computing" initiative in a developing country.

Building on their initial report in 2010, they will be discussing their second report with us. This second report examines the academic achievement and impacts on cognitive skills that XO laptops facilitated in a 15-month randomized control trial with 21,000 students in 319 schools.

Joining us will be Christoph Derndorfer, editor of OLPC News and investigator of OLPC in South America, to give context to the report and "one laptop per child" efforts around the world - programs that feature 1:1 computing regardless of their technology choice. Moderating the discussion will be Wayan Vota, who can promise that this Salon will be a very lively discussion at the intersection of technology and education. Please RSVP early - we will reach capacity fast.
