How Can We Bridge Gender Gaps and Increase Women and Girls Access to Technology?

Washington DC - July 21st - RSVP Now

Decades of research have shown that women's empowerment is key to community development. Yet research has also shown that the social constructs around gender have led to gender-based discrimination. Men and boys usually have better access to technology tools, and more skills and experience in using them than women and girls, which perpetuates a technology gender gap and keeps women and girls systemically underserved.

This brings forth key questions for digital development professionals around gender roles with technology and equal access for women and girls:
  • If we know that there is a gender gap, what are we doing about it? What are the underlying causes of the gap? How can we help bridge this gap?
  • What can be done to influence gatekeepers and wider society to prioritize women and girls’ access, use, and control of ICT? What practical steps could different actors take?
  • How can we show the benefit of greater ICT access for women and girls? Could relevant content be an issue? Then what should we do?
  • How can we engage men and boys, and those who currently hold power, as allies and equals in our efforts?
  • What about “intersectionality"? Which women and girls are we talking about, and what do we know about their particular circumstances? What about those who are marginalized in multiple ways?
Please RSVP now to join the next Technology Salon DC that will take a deep dive into the issues of technology, gender, and development. Our discussion will be lead by three thought leaders on the role of women and girls, and their interactions with technology: We’ll have hot coffee and catered breakfast treats for a morning rush, but seating is limited, so please RSVP now to join in the discussion. Once we reach our 35-person capacity there will be a waiting list!
