  • Monday-Thursday after school program classes begin this week. There is no school on Friday, October 11th due to a teacher professional development day, so Friday classes will begin the following week.
  • Classroom teachers have a list of after school program participants and classroom assignments. They will direct children to the right location.
  • Please remind your student(s) of their afternoon plan each day to avoid end-of-day confusion, especially if they ride the bus.
  • New this year! At pick-up, please wait in the lobby. Students will be brought to you. Do not go to the classroom for pick-up. Thank you!
Go Dolphins!

We are so excited! We're only 3 days in, and we're already at 33% of our Dolphin Dreams Direct Drive financial goal!! We have 100% PTA Board participation, and kids are buzzing about earning that extra recess.
Let's keep that momentum going. You're making a huge splash already!!
We need EVERYONE to participate because 77% of this year's budget is covering the school ask. Please remember that funds donated during this direct drive cover this year's expenses.

Need a refresher on what the PTA budget covers? Direct Drive FAQ’s can be found here. For Direct Drive queries, email Dan Dickenson and Lada Vishtak.

Congratulations to Kim Carmel for winning the Metropolitan Market gift basket and to Cheryl Gregory for winning the New Seasons gift basket! Thank you for participating early!
Thanks to Vertical World, we have an exciting gift certificate for you!
The earlier you participate, the greater the chance you'll win one of these fun prizes donated by local businesses.
Thank you, Kindergarten families! We had such a great turnout at the Kindergarten Social that we went through over 100 name tags! We thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of you and getting to know your adorable kindergartners.

During the event, kindergartners wrote what they want to be when they grow up on paper leaves and apples. You can find their answers displayed on this paper tree in the display case right outside the gym through the month of October. A few of their answers are highlighted in the pictures above.

We would like to thank the Kindergarten committee members for organizing and preparing for this event. Thank you to Amy Lakhani, Emily Leedy, Elaine Kwong, Megan Kuiken, and Cheryl Brenner.
We'd also like to thank all of the members of the Lawton Baking Committee who donated their time and talent to baking up quite the spread! Thank you to Pricilla Wenneman, Lynn McBride, Sherie Purefoy, Kimberley Mertz, Elisabeth Fretz, Megan Kuiken, Jen Thompson, Melanthia Peterman, Gwynn Junkin, Meaghann McDermid, Jen Currit, Nelly Kakulya, Jon Nuwer, and Lindsay Berry.
Don't forget to stop by Nutty Squirrel Gelato in Magnolia on Tuesday, October 8th between the hours of 3-7 p.m. for two scoops of gelato in a taco-shaped waffle cone.

A big thanks to Ms. Ulmer and Ms. Hafzalla for volunteering to be our Celebrity Scoopers! They'll be scooping gelato from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m.

15% of all purchases made between 3-7 p.m. go toward the Lawton PTA. The Taco Tuesday taco waffle is the special, but you can purchase other items, and the proceeds will go to Lawton.

Thank you!
We need yoUr energy, expertise and whatever time you can give to make Lawton school programs and community events a success.

Lawton PTA Committee Sign-Up Sheet
Thank U to all our parent volunteers!
Do U want to know more about what these committee/positions do before signing up?

Music Program Committee Member – As a member of this committee, U get to work with Ms. Cooper to help her plan for concerts and other performances during the school year. Are you crafty? Ms. Cooper would love help decorating the stage and creating simple costumes.
Chair for Fall Festival (2nd grade families) – The date has been set and the DJ has been booked. Kids will provide the entertainment for the night. Lots of parents are willing to help decorate for and clean up after the event. We need a chair to plan for the event and help organize parent volunteers. As chair of this committee, U will also need to coordinate the bake sale and communicate with other committees to help kick off the Fall Food Drive and celebrate the end of the Dolphin Dreams Direct Drive.
Chair for Spring Art Auction (3rd grade families) – Wow, we know this is a BIG lift. But, this committee is BIG (11 members) and so is the support from our community. The date of the auction has been set and the location booked. Past chairs are willing to share their tips for pulling off a successful auction. We need a chair to assign tasks and organize parent volunteers. As chair of this committee, U will work with a team to plan a very fun and important night for our school.
IslandWood Fundraising (4th grade families) – 4th grade families, we need U to help plan various fundraising events throughout the year to cover the cost of sending our 4th graders to IslandWood when they are 5th graders. We need to raise at least $3,00 to cover transportation and teacher expenses. Any additional funds will be allocated to reduce the per student cost. Fundraising events include BINGO Night and a Magic Show.
5th Grade Promotion (4th grade families) – It’s a Lawton tradition that 4th grade families host 5th Grade Promotion. We need a team to communicate with the 5th grade teaching team and main office to plan this celebration. As a committee member, U will help plan, decorate and clean up after the event. Promotion is scheduled for June 8th.

Gun Safety News:
  • Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America launched its Be SMART campaign to raise awareness that responsible gun storage can save children's lives. Every adult can play a role in keeping kids and communities safer. See their tips here.
  • The National PTA has amended their position on gun safety, believing we must enact common sense legislation that will reduce gun violence and help protect all children and youth while protecting the lawful use of firearms for sport and personal protection. You can view their statement here.
Planning to get a flu shot? You're in luck! Lawton will be offering a flu clinic on Tuesday, October 15th from 7:45 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

From the Seattle Public Schools website:

Protect yourself, your child, and your community from the flu. Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will provide the annual flu shot to students (ages 4 and older), staff and community members at all schools and JSCEE. Most forms of insurance (including Apple Health and Medicaid) and cash or check are accepted.

The form needs to be completely filled out. Families who have no insurance can write “No insurance” and the student can still get a flu shot. Students who are enrolled in their school-based health center can also get the flu shot through the SBHC.
Last year, the PTA sponsored a Parent Education Night on Internet Safety with Ms. Stefanie Thomas. Ms. Thomas has worked in the area of Internet Crimes Against Children on the local and federal level. Her eye-opening parent presentation was such a hit that the school and PTA invited her to present to Lawton students last June.

Ms. Thomas is back again on Friday, October 18th to discuss the importance of keeping safe on the Internet with our 4th and 5th grade students. Her presentation will be geared toward the elementary school level with information on cyberbullying, cell phone usage, texting, online gaming, social networking, and the importance of talking to parents if something online doesn't seem quite right.

With such easy access to online videos, games, and social networking sites, Ms. Thomas explained to parents that it is important to have conversations early on with their children to keep them safe from online predators.

PTA members took notes on last year's presentation and distributed a condensed version of those safety tips through room parents. If you are new to Lawton and would like a copy of that information, please reply to this newsletter.
For those of you new to Lawton, we have a lost and found bin/rack right outside the Commons (cafeteria). As you can see on top, we have quite the range of jackets, fleece pullovers, and hooded sweatshirts. In the bottom of the bin, you'll find rain boots, water bottles, folders, and other items that cannot be hung up. Kids get hot, remove these items, and set them down. They're kids. It happens. To make sure these items are returned to their rightful owners, clearly labeling them really helps our Lost & Found committee! If you think this looks full, wait another couple of weeks!

If it can be removed or set down, please label it.
Did you take photos from the Back to School Bash or from the Kindergarten Social? Don't forget to share those photos with Nelly Kakulya for the Lawton Elementary School yearbook. The yearbook committee will determine which photos will be in the yearbook, and they do their best to feature as many different students as possible. When sending in a yearbook photo, make sure to write "Yearbook: Back to School Bash" (or some other event) in the subject line to make organizing easier for Nelly. Thank you!
PNW Parent Education is a new non-profit organization with the goal of community-building for K-8 families by providing free, high quality educational events. The first event on Wednesday, October 23rd, is a two-hour event led by Lisa Krause, an adjunct professor of family science and parent coaching, called, "Overindulgence: Building Resiliency in the Face of the New Normal."
