Throughout the year, Lawton hosts many family-friendly events like the Back to School Bash, which are only made possible with the help of parent, teacher, and community volunteers. We thought it might be nice to let families know just how many volunteers it takes to pull off an event like the Back to School Bash by thanking everyone!
  • Thank you to Katya Adams and Mikelle Nuwer for the planning, scheduling and implementation of this well-attended event. Such a great way to kick of the new school year!
  • Thank you to Dr. Deno and Ms. Dixon for welcoming families, cleaning, and staying late to lock up. Many teachers stayed to mingle with everyone. We were so glad to see you! Thank you to Ms. Volk for helping to set up as well as Ms. Noel who helped throughout the evening.
  • Thank you to Secret Sausage for providing the event's meals and beverages. A portion of their sales benefits the PTA.
  • Thank you to Penny Koch-Patterson and the Lawton Baking Committee for baking such delicious desserts. And thanks to the new parents who just joined the committee!
  • Thank you to Melanthia Peterman, whose family is new to Lawton. She stayed after school to help set up the event and volunteered during the evening. Welcome to Lawton!
  • Thank you to all of the 1st grade family volunteers, former Lawton students, and other grade-level Lawton parents who volunteered their time to set up, supervise activities, apply temporary tattoos, clean up, and put tables away. In addition to the volunteers already listed above, we would like to thank:

Interested in supporting school-wide environmental education?!

Are you looking for an opportunity to volunteer at Lawton while making a difference supporting school-wide environmental education? Our school’s composting program needs your help!

Groups of student leaders in 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade would benefit from having an adult to help them and their peers sort our lunchroom trash. As a bonus, you’d have a chance to eat lunch with your child once or twice a week.

Please reach out to Kristina at if you are interested.
Hello, Lawton Families!

I will be at Lawton Elementary on Tuesdays and Thursdays this year! My hours are from 7:25 am – 3:00 pm but I’m happy to schedule anything after 3:00 pm to meet with parents about health plans, questions, etc.
  • I have a scheduled absence on Thursday, 10/3/19 – I’m getting married!
  • Many families received letters from health services about immunizations. Please feel free to turn in those forms in to me or ask me any questions about those. They will be processed much faster going through me than through central health services.
  • It’s that time again for vision and hearing screenings! K-3 and 5th graders get screened every year for vision and hearing. They are done by me at Lawton. Please feel free to contact me with questions or concerns.
  • There will be another flu clinic at Lawton Elementary on Tuesday, October 15th from 7:45 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The flu vaccine is free with most insurances and information and consent forms are available in the nurse’s office.
In Health,

Lawton is so lucky to receive the bike fleet first this year! Grades 3-5 will be participating in the biking unit beginning Thursday, September 19th and ending Friday, October 4th.

If your child owns a helmet, please label the helmet with their full name and room number, and send it with them to school. Helmets and hairnets will be provided for students who do not bring helmets. Students may NOT bring their own bikes for this unit.

Parent volunteers are greatly needed during this unit, so please contact Ms. Volk to help! If She will be happy to coordinate with you based on availability and your child(ren)/s PE schedule.
Please read the information on your Picture Day form. Below are a few highlights for those families new to Lawton.
  • Students will take individual pictures as well as class photos much like this GIF. Grey Sky Productions asks that students avoid wearing green because the company uses a green screen when editing for the various photo backgrounds.
  • Each student will receive ONE 7x5 class photo and ONE ID free, regardless of purchase. Only order a class picture if you want an extra, a silly version, or a larger size.
  • You can pre-pay online by following the link provided to you on the Picture Day form.

Kids need nutritious meals to focus and thrive. The USDA is currently taking public comments on a proposed rule change that threatens to leave tens of thousands of Washington State students without access to the free school meals they previously qualified for. Washington State PTA is asking you to take action by submitting a public comment.
During the school year, the first Friday of the month is designated as a School Spirit Day. When you get the chance to look over your Lawton Elementary Family Calendar from your First Day Packets, you'll see the first School Spirit Day is Friday, October 4th. Students and teachers are encouraged to wear anything tie-dyed.

If your child likes to participate in school spirit events, take a look at the calendar now so you're not caught off-guard when your child asks where their rainbow socks are. We will list every School Spirit Day in the calendar section of the newsletter in case you need reminders.

Hey! If your kids attend Lawton Elementary, this FREE event is for you! Come to Barre3 Ballard for a 60-minute class knowing that you belong. Barre3 is a full body, balanced workout that combines strength conditioning, cardio and mindfulness. What we love about Barre3 is that we are for everyone. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all approach to exercise. Instead, we empower each individual to modify postures and develop body awareness for lasting results. Bring a water bottle and your enthusiasm. We'll bring the music, motivation, and the fun. We can't wait to see you!
Did you know that the Every Kid Outdoor Program provides 4th grade students with free entrance to public lands? See the following details from our friends at the Seattle Area National Park Sites:

If you are a fourth grader (including home-schooled and free-choice learners 10 years of age) you get unlimited, free access for you and your family to any federal lands or waters through August 31, 2020.

In the Seattle area, the Interagency Fourth Grade Pass covers the $30 entrance fee at Mount Rainier and Olympic national parks, the $5 trailhead parking fee at Mount Baker-Snoqualmie and Olympic national forests, the $3 parking fee at the Billy Frank Jr. Nisqually Wildlife Refuge, the $10 youth admission fee to the Wing Luke Museum of the Asian Pacific American Experience, and more!

To obtain the free pass, fourth grade students can visit, participate in a short educational activity, and download a voucher. The voucher is valid for multiple use between September 1, 2019 and August 31, 2020 and may be exchanged for a plastic keepsake pass at participating federal lands.

The Every Kid Outdoors Program was established by Congress in 2019. It replaces the Every Kid in a Park Program which was launched in 2015. It is an interagency collaboration between the National Park Service, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Bureau of Reclamation, Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Forest Service.
