Hello, Kindergarten families! The Kindergarten Committee would like to invite you to attend the Lawton PTA-sponsored Kindergarten Social this Thursday, October 3rd from 6-7 p.m. This will be a fun, casual event for families to get to know one another.

The committee is providing families with apple cider and a fall craft to complete. Our amazing Lawton Baking Committee is generously baking up dozens of delicious sweet treats for the event. Keep in mind that dinner will not be served, so you'll either need to embrace the idea of "dessert first" or grab a bite to eat before you arrive. We are planning for 75-100 people, and that includes parents/guardians and siblings.

Special Requests
  • We kindly remind families that daytime school rules apply to evening events. Students are not allowed on the stage at any time during the event.
  • After the Back to School Bash, parents and staff stayed late to throw away food, drinks, and garbage that were left behind. While this should go without saying, we would greatly appreciate families tidying up their space before leaving at the end of the night. Our small committee is responsible for cleaning and mopping after everyone goes home. Thank you in advance for helping us out!
The completed crafts will be displayed in the hallway through the month of October. We look forward to seeing you on Thursday!
Wednesday, October 2nd is National Custodian Appreciation Day! Our custodian, Alex, deserves to be recognized for a job done well. The next time you see Alex, don't forget to thank him for all his hard work!
We need yoUr energy, expertise and whatever time you can give to make Lawton school programs and community events a success.
The PTA is still searching for parents to:
  • Chair the Social/Cooking Committee
  • Help Ms. Cooper with the Music Program
  • Take the lead on planning the Fall Festival on November 8th (2nd grade families)
  • Take the lead on planning the Spring Art Auction (3rd grade families)
  • Help with IslandWood fundraising events (4th grade families)
  • Help plan 5th Grade Promotion (4th grade families)
  • Organize food and gifts for Staff Appreciation Week (5th grade families)
Thank U to all our parent volunteers!
Do U want to know more about what these committee/positions do before signing up?
Chair Social/Cooking Committee – We have a lot of chefs willing to provide food for the Lawton staff throughout the year. We need a chair to organize their efforts and make sure their culinary delights are delivered when requested. As chair of this committee, U will be the contact for the main office and will organize committee members to prepare and deliver food when requested by the staff/main office.
Music Program Committee Member – As a member of this committee, U get to work with Ms. Cooper to help her plan for concerts and other performances during the school year. Are you crafty? Ms. Cooper would love help decorating the stage and creating simple costumes.
Chair for Fall Festival (2nd grade families) – The date has been set and the DJ has been booked. Kids will provide the entertainment for the night. Lots of parents are willing to help decorate for and clean up after the event. We need a chair to plan for the event and help organize parent volunteers. As chair of this committee, U will also need to coordinate the bake sale and communicate with other committees to help kick off the Fall Food Drive and celebrate the end of the Dolphin Dreams Direct Drive.
Chair for Spring Art Auction (3rd grade families) – Wow, we know this is a BIG lift. But, this committee is BIG (11 members) and so is the support from our community. The date of the auction has been set and the location booked. Past chairs are willing to share their tips for pulling off a successful auction. We need a chair to assign tasks and organize parent volunteers. As chair of this committee, U will work with a team to plan a very fun and important night for our school.
IslandWood Fundraising (4th grade families) – 4th grade families, we need U to help plan various fundraising events throughout the year to cover the cost of sending our 4th graders to IslandWood when they are 5th graders. We need to raise at least $3,500 to cover transportation and teacher expenses. Any additional funds will be allocated to reduce the per student cost. Fundraising events include BINGO Night and a Magic Show.
5th Grade Promotion (4th grade families) – It’s a Lawton tradition that 4th grade families host 5th Grade Promotion. We need a team to communicate with the 5th grade teaching team and main office to plan this celebration. As a committee member, U will help plan, decorate and clean up after the event. Promotion is scheduled for June 8th.
Staff Appreciation Week (5th grade families) – We need 5th grade families to help organize daily lunches and small gifts of appreciation for the Lawton Staff during Staff Appreciation Week in May. As a member of this committee, U will be able to thank the Lawton Staff for all they have done to prepare your 5th graders for middle school.
  • Second-Chance registration opened on Friday, September 27, 2019 at 9:00 a.m., and it will close on October 2, 2019 at 9:00 p.m.
  • Second-Chance registration is conducted as first-come, first-served. Payment must be made at the time of registration.
  • There are still after school classes available, so check them out at
Do you still have your Lawton Family Calendar handy? The first Friday of every month students are in class is a School Spirit Day. Friday, October 4th is Tie-Dye Day.
Stanford’s Educational Opportunity Project
If you like data, you’ll love this. The Stanford Education Data Archive (SEDA) launches an educational data archive to help scholars, policymakers, educators, and parents learn how to improve educational opportunity for all children. SEDA includes a range of detailed data on educational conditions and outcomes in school districts across the United States. It includes measures of academic achievement and achievement gaps for school districts and counties, as well as district-level measures of racial and socioeconomic composition, racial and socioeconomic segregation patterns, and other features of the schooling system. The data are publicly available here, so you can obtain info about Lawton and any other U.S. schools and communities:
Save the Date! Don't forget to stop by Nutty Squirrel Gelato on Tuesday, October 8th between the hours of 3-7 p.m. for two scoops of gelato in a taco-shaped waffle cone. We have two guest scoopers this time, and we'll let you know who they are next week! They'll be scooping from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. 15% of all purchases made between 3-7 p.m. go toward the Lawton PTA. The Taco Tuesday taco waffle is the special, but you can purchase other items, and the proceeds will go to Lawton. Thank you!
Planning to get a flu shot? You're in luck! Lawton will be offering a flu clinic on Tuesday, October 15th from 7:45 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.

From the Seattle Public Schools website:

Protect yourself, your child, and your community from the flu. Seattle Visiting Nurse Association will provide the annual flu shot to students (ages 4 and older), staff and community members at all schools and JSCEE. Most forms of insurance (including Apple Health and Medicaid) and cash or check are accepted.

The form needs to be completely filled out. Families who have no insurance can write “No insurance” and the student can still get a flu shot. Students who are enrolled in their school-based health center can also get the flu shot through the SBHC.
Lice happens. The best way to prevent lice from spreading is early detection and treatment! Lice spread from close contact, but they cannot jump or fly. Be diligent and check your child's hair regularly. Remind them not to share hats, headbands, or hooded coats/sweatshirts. For more information than you'd ever want to know about lice, check out Seattle Children's informational guide on prevention and removal.
Sign up for AmazonSmile, and select Lawton Elementary School PTA as the organization you support. A small fraction of your purchases go back to helping to support PTA programming through passive fundraising. You can also set up an account with Fred Meyer's in-store program, and Bartell's B Caring Program.
