3 Spring Sounds that Boost
Your Mental Health

After a long winter, we all look forward to warmer sunshine, longer daylight, gardens and BBQs.  But did you know that the sounds of spring can also make you feel better?  These 3 spring-time sounds can actually boost your mental health.

1)  Bird songs

Thousands upon thousands of birds are returning to our lakes, forests, parks and back yards.  Numerous studies have proven a link between hearing the singing of birds and a more optimistic and happier mental outlook.  The sounds of birds stimulate feelings of creativity and freedom. With our expansive green space and mature trees, Thorncliff attracts many song birds.

2)  Running water

The gentle sounds of flowing water, bubbling and trickling along cause our nervous system to release hormones (dopamines) that calm us down. These sounds stimulate feelings of compassion and empathy.

3)  Community sounds

The sounds of children playing outside, the hum of lawnmowers, bicycle bells, and the chatter of friends and neighbours; these are community sounds that remind us we are part of something bigger.  These sounds increase our sense of motivation and tend to propel us to be more active.
So, open your windows and listen for these sounds, it is healthy for you!  Just by hearing them you will feel better about yourself, about your day, and whatever situations you may find yourself.

Rink Redevelopment

In January 2019, the Thorncliff Rink Removal and Site Redevelopment Committee presented a recommendation to TCL Board of Directors for a two-phase project with an option for phase 3 should the necessary funding be acquired. At that time, TCL ear-marked $10,000 for the capital project. The proposal was approved and in March 2019 TCL submitted an extensive application to the City of Edmonton for their consideration and approval of this proposed redevelopment project.
We will continue to keep the Thorncliff Community abreast of our progress through our monthly newsletter and this website.

For more information see the Community Matters page on the TCL website.
The next Thorncliff Community League meeting will be held at on March 21, 2019, beginning at 6:00pm.

Meetings are held in
Thorncliffe Elementary School, please ring the bell at the front entrance doors.

All community residents are welcome to attend!
We’re going green, again!  What was once a grey cement plot has been transformed into Thorncliff Community Garden.  This spring will begin the 3rd growing season and the gardens have been a beautiful success.  A planting box in TCL Garden is 6ft x 12ft which is more than enough space to grow all kinds of fresh garden plants.
We expanded the number of garden beds last year and there are still a couple plots left for rent.
