COOKIN’ UP WINS
Corinth Elementary Kid2Chef Teams Compete at District Contest
All three Corinth Elementary Kid2Chef teams placed in the top 5 in their categories at the District 4H Cooking Competition held at Fair Park in Dallas on Friday, March 23. With 62 teams competing, Team Spice Girls placed 2nd
, and Team Texas Junior Chefs and Team Mini Chefs placed 5th
in their competitions.
To compete, each team had 40 minutes to plan and prepare dishes using specified ingredients for the category. CE’s three teams competed in Bread and Grains, Healthy Snack and Main Dish contests.
Team Spice Girls - Kynnadi Luke, Angeline Gavidia, Randi Luke, Charlotte Murray and Ashlyn Staubus placed 2nd
in Bread and Grains. They were give 3 ingredients to incorporate - blueberries, cream cheese and tortillas. They added ingredients from the pantry and made homemade pico de gallo and tortilla chips, and homemade spicy tortilla chips with a blueberry cream cheese spread.
Team Texas Junior Chefs - Kate Smith, Aubrey Caldwell, Brileigh Frase and Tatum Harding placed 5th in Healthy Snacks and were given these ingredients: 1 English muffin, cheese, and pizza sauce. They added items from the pantry to make an Italian pizza pasta and spinach salad with pan seared muffin bread bites.
Team Mini Chefs - Bella LaMay, Grace Hargis, Floyd Wagner, Noel Perez and Brynlee Wilson placed 5th
in Main Dish. They were given the following ingredients in their bag: 3 eggs, bell pepper, tomato and onion. They added items from the pantry to make a vegetarian pasta bowl.
All the teams were able to complete their challenge in the 40 minutes allowed. Each team went through an oral presentation of the nutritional aspects of their dish, the safety and cleanliness procedures that they followed during the competition and the process in which they prepared their dish. They also included healthy eating choices through presenting about My Plate, as well as an approximate cost analysis of the dishes that they served.
The students learned these culinary skills by participating in Kid2Chef, a 4H after-school program led by Corinth Elementary teachers Cindy Medlicott and Anne Waidelich.
“We were extremely proud of the job that our teams did in this cooking challenge,” Mrs. Medlicott said. “They put forth a very serious effort and represented Corinth Elementary quite well. We were told before the competition by district 4H coordinator that it was very difficult and highly unlikely that first time competitors would place in this competition and all three of our teams placed in the top 5 of their categories! Our goal was for the kids to have a culinary experience that will help them to continue the journey of learning more about cooking and challenge themselves to create and try new dishes in the future. We feel that the kids all felt good about the experience and want to continue this culinary journey.”
