Fred Anderson Dog Park construction in full swing!
There's been a lot of earth moving going on along Wabash between 16th and 18th, lately! Here's a side-by-side comparison of the Fred Anderson Park
construction drawing and the site as it appeared a few weeks ago. Notice the oval features at the top right and lower left are taking shape. These will become elevated tree-filled planter berms, and the two at the south end in the drawing, the sources of flowing water features!
The most recent information we have is that the park will be completed in the Fall 2014
. Please follow the Fred Anderson Dog Park Facebook page
or the Fred Anderson DFA Twitter feed
for the latest updates. We'll also be posting information as we receive it on the South Loop Dog PAC blog
Here's a computer rendering from the architects at Altamanu
of what the park will look like as viewed from the South. Pretty cool!
DFA Tags! Do you have yours?
A reminder that DFA tags are issued on a yearly basis, so please be sure to renew your pup's tags the next time you visit your vet! The City requires that you have DFA tags (and rabies and a few other vaccines or titers) in order to visit to the 'dog friendly areas'.
Information about Chicago DFA tags is available here.
Thanks to everyone who came out to help with our cleanups at Coliseum Park Dog Run
, d'Angelo Park DFA
and Grant Bark Park
last month. We plan to be out again mid-summer, this time with a new power washer
, so watch for the announcements! We are also putting together a schedule for mini-cleanups at each park to help keep them looking their best between major cleanups.
And please remember - the artificial turf at CPDR needs special attention!
Dogs love it, but if your dog poops there, you've got
to clean it up, quick!
Otherwise, the turf begins to degrade and we will end up with a stinking mess! Fred Anderson Dog Park will also have a lot of artificial turf (yay!
), so it's pretty critical that we as the dog community start developing good habits. Save the turf!
City-wide DFA developments!
A city-wide DFA Committee meeting was held earlier this year bringing the groups that support each of the 20+ dog parks in Chicago
into the same room to discuss ideas and share concerns. The Chicago Park District clarified the new Agreement that is allowing Petco Unleashed
to hold events at Montrose Dog Beach.
Group members discussed how to save costs by collectively purchasing materials, gravel and equipment, and how to facilitate communication and resource sharing among DFA Committees in Chicago.
One request that we made to the Park District was that they supply ‘official’ signage identifying and endorsing the DFA Committee responsible for each of the DFAs. A mock-up was distributed at the meeting for comment, and we look forward to seeing signs like these at our local parks this year!
Our 2014 Membership Drive is underway!
Did you know the Chicago Park District does not
take care of your dog parks? That's what we
The City requires that park users take responsibility for maintenance
of dog friendly areas, which is what the South Loop Dog PAC does for our South Loop dog parks. The South Loop Dog Park Action Cooperative, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, relies on our membership and on donations to support park maintenance, repairs, education, events, and even to pay for poop bags (over 25,000 bags a year!).
Here's a shout-out and thank you
to all our members who supported us last year - watch for a friendly renewal reminder coming your way soon! - and a thank you
to those who have newly joined for 2014!
Please support your local dog parks by becoming a member or making a donation today!
Memberships begin at $40 a year.
