OBESITY IN AMERICA REACHES NEW HIGHS
More Women Than Ever Have Obesity,
Rates Increased Slightly Among Teens

New research from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) shows between 2013 and 2014, a record number of women had obesity -- about 40 percent. Rates of obesity among men on the other, while still high at 35 percent have remained the same since 2012, the last time the census was conducted. This leaves an overall obesity rate among adults of about 38 percent.

A second study found the prevalence of the disease among teens has doubled in just one generation. Among children and adolescents, 17 percent had obesity in 2011-2014, while nearly 5.8 percent had severe obesity. Both studies were published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA).

“Obesity remains the number one public health threat in America,” said Raul J. Rosenthal, MD, president of the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS). “New treatment strategies are required. We cannot continue to do the same things and expect different results. Greater access to proven treatments like bariatric surgery are necessary and must become a routine part of the discussion between patients and their doctors. This is not a subject to be avoided.”

Dr. Shawn Garber featured in MD Magazine:
New Procedure Provides Alternative Weight Loss Solution

Gastric bypass may be one of the most common solutions in the weight loss struggle, but there is also work being done to find less invasive options as well. Speaking at Digestive Disease Week (DDW 2016) in San Diego, California Shawn Garber, MD, from the New York Bariatric Group discussed the success he has seen with a less invasive procedure in his own practice. Using a double balloon device, Garber said doctors are able to help their patients while also improving the safety of previous balloon based options which presented their own set of potential issues for patients.

CHICKEN SHASLIK SALAD
Ingredients

  • 4 skinless and boneless chicken breasts, cut into chunks
  • 8 small shallots, peeled and halved (or quartered if large)
  • 1 tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 tsp honey
  • ½ tsp ground cumin
  • 1 clove garlic, crushed
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 butter head lettuce, shredded
  • 1 avocado, peeled, stoned and sliced
  • ¼ cucumber, chopped
  • 12 cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 2 tbsp. fat-free dressing
  • 4 flat breads or wraps to serve (optional)
  • lemon wedges/halves for squeezing

 Directions

  1.  Place the chicken chunks and shallots in a bowl with the olive oil, honey, cumin, garlic and salt and pepper to taste, mixing well. Leave to marinate for 20 minutes or overnight in the refrigerator.
  2.  If you’re using wooden skewers to cook, soak in cold water so that they do not char when cooking.
  3.  Thread the chicken and shallots onto 8 skewers then cook over a medium BBQ heat or under a medium broiler/grill, for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently until cooked and the meat is no longer pink.
  4.  When almost cooked, heat the flat breads if using.
  5.  To serve, toss the lettuce, avocado, cucumber and tomatoes in the dressing or drizzle over. Pile on the flat breads or onto a plate and top with the cooked kebabs. Serve with lemon wedges or halves for squeezing over.
