We end 2012 with immense gratitude for our volunteers, supporters, friends, and families. With your help, we were able to continue and improve programs and strengthen partnerships. You have helped us provide our English and Spanish warmlines, maintain and enhance the PSI website, train and support volunteers, translate and disperse educational materials, provide professional trainings, offer conference scholarships, host our Chat with An Expert for both Mothers and Dads, and add a Chat with the Founder Jane Honikman. Only through your generosity will we be able to sustain and improve our programs and services in 2013.
PSI responds to USA Today article on SSRIs in pregnancy
We hope you will end the year with PSI in your giving plans. It's easy -- visit our Network for Good page. Your tax-deductible contribution will help us to continue to provide communities worldwide with reliable, compassionate and essential support, resources, and informed professional care. Thank you for your support!
Leslie Lowell Stoutenburg, RNC, MS, PSI President
Wendy N. Davis, PhD, PSI Executive Director
In October 2012, USA Today published an article on the use of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors during pregnancy, emphasizing the risks to pregnant women. Many among the perinatal psychiatric community felt it created more fear than increased knowledge. Requests for guidance and scientific information came quickly to PSI. After gathering opinions, references, and analysis from perinatal psychiatric experts, the PSI Board and staff created talking points for members and volunteer support coordinators, as well as this open letter to the maternal mental health community and the media, signed by 14 medical experts. Read the full discussion here.
PSI Community Celebrations is a new project launched in 2012 recognizing local gatherings created to raise funds and awareness for PSI. We have enjoyed hearing stories from our three 2012 Celebrations in California, New Jersey, and Oregon and are excited for the plans for a Portland, Maine, event in April 2013 hosted by PSI Coordinator Iman Washington.
Announcing PSI Community Celebrations
We love to hear about the creative ways that people gather to break bread in the shared mission of bringing together community resources, volunteers, and supporters -- from wine and cheese in San Jose to brunch in Maplewood to Happy Hour in Portland. Contact us for more information on hosting a PSI Community Celebration. We will help you get started!
Highlights from the 2012 PSI Celebrations:
Maplewood, New Jersey, USA, October 28 -- PSI Board Member Lorraine Caputo, LCSW, President's Advisory Council Linda Klempner, PhD and Alexis Menken, PhD, hosted a warm brunch at the home of Susan Kraham in honor of the advocacy of Former First Lady of New Jersey Mary Jo Codey and Psychologist Alexis Menken, PhD. Twenty-five brave souls gathered together just as Hurricane Sandy was threatening to sweep through the state! PSI member Ivy Shih Leung read an excerpt from her book, One Mom's Journey to Motherhood: Infertility, Childbirth Complications, and Postpartum Depression, Oh My! She also donated all proceeds from book sales that day to PSI, bringing the total fundraising amount to $2460.
San Jose, California, USA, October 27 -- Juli Fraga, PsyD, PSI's fundraising chair, and Wendy Sue Horn, LCSW, hosted this Celebration at El Camino Hospital, where Pec Indman, EdD, MFT, gave a compelling talk about the need for maternal mental health services and Nirmaljit Kaur Dhami, MD, shared information about the innovative El Camino MOMS program. PSI gratefully thanks Celebration sponsors including El Camino Hospital, Regroup Therapy, and Looptivity. Total funds raised for PSI was $900.
Portland, Oregon, USA December1 -- Beth Bassett, PSI Executive Director Wendy Davis, Katharine Salzmann, and Lianne Swanson hosted this Celebration at the beautiful Rhapsody Boutique, highlighting several Oregon resources for perinatal mental health. Sixty-five friends and colleagues attended the party, enjoying food, wine, beer, raffle prizes, music by local artists Greg Thelen on guitar and Kendra Carpenter on cello, and the awarding of the 2012 PSI "Healthcare Leadership Award" to Pediatrician R.J. Gillespie, MD, for his pioneering work training pediatricians and primary care providers in maternal mental health screening and referral. Our generous Sponsors included ABC Doula Service, Terra Firma Floors, Baker & Spice, Cellar Door Coffee, Foxfire Teas, and Burlingame Fred Meyer. Total dollars raised for PSI were $2905.
Thank you to all PSI Celebration hosts, sponsors, donors, and guests!
