MARCH MADNESS

Just back from Hong Kong, it's funny I feel like an officer reporting back to the home office whenever I go to HQ, or if I’m acting cool, like Bond visiting M and Q. I get the latest info, missions and above all see the coming stuff, the experiment first hand, the prototypes fresh from courier boxes instead of waiting for them to be delivered to my front lines.

It goes without saying, but I will, I love 3A! I love the process, the pain, the highs and the lows, the people, the plastic, and if all fell away tomorrow - not one regret or arch thought. 3A is my art as much as the paintings and drawings or the thoughts I have at 3AM every night. Ha, maybe stomping on my own HK patch makes me too romantic and wistful, but as I say, fuck it, I got you 3A!

Anyway, what's been going on? Ok, spent the weekend discussing our upcoming STAR WARS line, which I'll say is gonna be called STAR WARS ALTERNATE for now, that's pretty exciting for me, coz I’m one of those fuckers that got inspired the day I saw the first SW film! Creative puberty hit hard that day, soon as I got home that day I made lego space ships and pretended to be Luke Skywalker, I’m not sure I ever stopped. So to be able to add to the story - albeit an alternate view - is a gift, and that goes for all of us who will directly shape this new world. Expect a proper press release and info, and I’m sure everyone will say Ash you can’t just casually announce, but hey I’m Luke Skywalker, and if I remember he kinda just did things his own way!

Played with DONKERS, saw the latest 24” range of figures, and was amazed by the wonderful clothing, discussed the size of the Archer TK’s bow and dioramas with Andrew, polymorphic ball joints with Eddy, and drank white wine with Kim. Hung out in Stanley hunting cats.

Oh yea, so we are doing three show this year that kinda fit together starting with the THAI TOY EXPO (REMEMBER THE TIME) April 30th - May 3rd, SDCC (WE DIED IN THE SUN) July 9th - 12th (BUT WITH SMILES ON OUR LIPS) and finally the big one in Japan, we are taking over the entire 3331 Arts Chiyoda Tokyo centre September 19th-27th.

Lot's of stuff going on, now back to the front line waiting for news from home!

How did you discover 3A?
I've been a collector of toys all my life, I think it all started when I got a Shogun Warriors Godzilla when I was about 3 years old. As for 3A I have to give credit to my best friend Patrick for forcing 3A on me, he kept telling me about this company that makes these cool robots and human figures and I should check them out, but I was stubborn and refused to look them up. Finally one day he came over to my place and with his newly acquired Heavy TK Soh, I finally opened up to checking out 3A after seeing that figure. He showed me Tomorrow Kings, Dropcloths, 1/12 Berties and then he showed me this line called Adventure Kartel, at that point there were only two AK figures released the Boiler Zomb and Tommy Mission. Once he showed me those 2 figures I was hooked on Adventure Kartel and 3A

What was your first 3A figure?
My First 3A figure was the WWRp Medic Bertie and Square retail set, the weathering on it just blew me away, I hadn't seen anything like it. A week later I got a Tommy Mission, my brain hurt from the awesomeness and also from the 3A smell.

Favorite 3A item in your collection?
This is a hard question..but if I have to pick one it's gotta be OG Boiler Zomb. Love him so much. Fighting JC is a close second.

What would you like to see made or are looking forward to?
Keep the Adventure Kartel figures coming! Looking forward to MEGA ZOMB and I can't wait to see Ash's Spider-Man from the Marvel line!

What is your 3A grail? (if you don't have one, what is the figure you'd love to one day hope to obtain?)
My 3A grail has to be The Mighty Drown I got during the Fighting JC sale, and the figures I'd  love to have one day would have to be an OG Zombot and the Atrocity Exhibition Set with that Zomb Tommy figure.

3A | Q+A

With Ashley Wood

Q: About the F-legion Cyborgs, what part of them is still human? Their brains? Please tell us more about them I'm dying to know more! They are such cool characters!
Ash: Brains, the rest is metal, especially their hearts. They were made to be robots though, only on the rare occasion when a F-Legion head has the brains seen, and everyone goes, oh shit, there be brains in that head. The tribe of F-legion is one I have thought on many times, maybe it's time to release some more members ! Glad ya dig em!

Q: What's next in store for 3A Publishing in 2015? Are there any new and upcoming artists who's work you're enjoying? Or books planned from some of your peers and friends?
Ash: Well the publishing is a for the love only affair, even when selling all copies it breaks even at best. We have only the one outlet to sell and are not set up for much more beyond that. But saying that, we will have the first issue of William Wray's oversized comic HAPPY COMICS ready for SDCC, more from me, Phil Hale, Siuyin, and Crystal-Jade Vaughan! IDW will also be publishing many things from me and 3A, from a new art book series, a large hardcover Pascha book, the Starling series, an ongoing String Divers comic, and actually quite a bit more...

Q: I'm so excited about Donker! How did the collaboration with Die Antwoord come about?
Ash: Free spirits haunt the same graveyards!

Q: Any updates on Mrs Shadow or when might we see a glimpse of the final figure for the AKlub members?
Ash: Well this is how it is, I designed and had a sample way back in the day, but I just didn’t like it after all was said and done. That's my internal QC speaking. If I don’t think "fuck, this is cool!" then it probably isn’t and I junk it. So I went back and redid it, you guys will see soon!

Q: Will we see some more classic Popbot figures this year? I'm dying for an Andy or Misty Slush or even Les Mort!
Ash: I'm only one man, I do this and the rest every day man, never does a day pass without me pushing somewhere. If I could get the mentioned characters out any sooner I would, If I could do better I would! But I'll say this, I was talking to Howard from How to Work this past weekend about Les Mort and maybe working together on re-vamped version, we shall see!

Q: What role do the Fallen play in SOTF?
Ash: They are the shadow cast by NOM, their opposite reflection, their job is chaos, to retard light, to corrupt, their mission is the same as it always has been throughout the ages!
