GOOD NEWS FOR ASHFORD W/C 28th November 2021
The start of the Church's New Year!
MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM RECTOR
The Church’s year begins with Advent – a time to get ready for God’s coming amongst us. Yes, that includes our spiritual preparation for celebrating Christmas, but it’s more than that. It’s an annual opportunity to clear away some of the clutter that stops us responding with all our heart to God’s invitation to us in Jesus Christ.
We look forward to Christmas, Easter and Pentecost as the great celebrations each year of how that invitation has come to us. But the invitation is always for now, it’s for today. And it’s not just for us who belong to the church: it’s for everyone, for our family, friends, neighbours and colleagues. You can’t really receive this invitation, and know what wonderful good news it is, without wanting to pass it on.
During this Advent, each church’s leadership team will be continuing the task of discerning what might be the handful of major priorities that the church is called to focus on over the next five years, as they prepare to report back to the PCC in January. That will involve discussion, consultation, careful thinking – but it’s also a profoundly spiritual task. How can we prepare the way for what God is wanting to do in the communities we are seeking to serve, and what changes might that mean for us?
CHILDREN'S ARTWORK AT ST MARY'S ASHFORD
Recently some of the children were given colouring exercises at church. Some of them are amazing. We thought you would like to see a selection of their work. Well done all involved
LIVING IN LOVE & FAITH - ASHFORD DEANERY
Ashford Deanery is planning to run the Living in Love and Faith course produced for national use by the Church of England on five Tuesdays, from 18th January to 15th February inclusive, at St Mary’s Ashford in the town centre. There will be space for different groups to meet separately for discussion as well as share some plenary input. Please do consider whether you might want to participate – if you’re part of a homegroup, why not come along together? There will be scope for our learning through the course to feed into a national process of reflection and consultation.
The Church of England website for Living in Love and Faith states: ‘The hope is for people in Church of England churches across the country to use the LLF resources to study and pray together. The resources are designed to encourage and enable engagement and learning in a variety of settings. This church-wide learning together, listening to one another, and listening to God is part of discerning a way forward for the Church of England in relation to matters of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage. The purpose of the resources is to enable the Church of England churches across the country to participate in a process of learning and praying together as part of discerning a way forward in relation to matters of identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage.’

PRAYING WITH AND FOR ONE ANOTHER
Almighty God, as we look for the coming of your kingdom, turn us from the darkness of sin to the light of holiness, that we may be ready to meet you in our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ.
In joyful expectation of his coming, we pray to Jesus our Saviour, that we would live day by day in the light of that hope and with a constant seeking for his kingdom here on earth.
We pray for those bereaved as a result of the tragedy in which people trying to cross the English Channel were drowned this week; for those who remain determined to attempt that crossing themselves, in desperation to make a new start in the UK; for those who set policy for how we respond to migrants and refugees, and for those who are responsible for implementing it, here and in France.
Loving God, as we enter into the season of Advent, we thank you for your patience and grace towards us. We pray for those who find themselves waiting at this time waiting for news, waiting for change, waiting for things to get better. As we await the coming of your Son, help our hearts to be open to receiving your gifts both obvious and hidden. May our waiting prepare us to enter into the mystery of the incarnation and draw closer to you.
