Jennifer Carpenter - “That's A Wrap!”
Jennifer Carpenter is a Charter Member of CPSA and has been working in colored pencils for over 30 years. She received her BA in Art from Bridgewater College in 1987. Her Art professor had wanted her to paint, but anything involving a brush only resulted in frustration...for them both. If only there was a neat and tidy medium with a wide range of colors that wouldn't dry up and could keep a fine point...! The professor admitted not knowing too much about the medium but was willing to bring in his barely used set of 24 Staedtler colored pencils and offer what support he could while Jennifer began a semester of independent study, drawing with Prismacolors one-on-one with her professor. That experience gave her the direction she needed for the rest of her life, so far.
Jennifer's life has taken many twists and turns but her passion for the medium has been the thread that stitched all stages of her journey into the colorful pencil tapestry of work she continues to produce, each piece with a story to tell, a bookmark which captures a favorite passage in time. She currently works from her basement studio in Christiansburg, VA when time permits while her work continues to appear in colored pencil publications, travels to exhibitions, and competes for awards at local, regional, and international events.

Jennifer Carpenter - “Shiny Baubles...In A Line...”
I have the large Icarus Board and keep it attached to my slanted drawing table at all times by looping a heavy duty bungee cord through the handle with both ends hooked over the top of my table. The greatest benefit of using the Icarus for me is how beautifully the pencils can be blended with ease for creating the glassy, shiny illusions I am “drawn” to. I generally like to completely obliterate the texture of the paper and incorporating heat decreases the amount of pressure [and time!] required to do so. I have successfully used Prismacolors, Verithins, Polychromos, Luminance, Albrecht Durer (dry), Derwent Studio, Derwent Artist, even the ol' Derwent Signature series, but my personal favorite for use on the Icarus are Caran D'ache Pablos pencils.
