Global Surgical Training Challenge Update

The Prototype Showcase

Our ten Discovery Award teams have been hard at work over the last few months developing prototypes for the surgical training modules.

On 18 August 2021, they will present their training modules in a one-hour online Prototype Showcase. The virtual event is open to the global surgery community with  demonstrations from these ten teams that are changing the paradigm of how surgical practitioners learn and assess life-saving skills.

You will see how these cutting edge, low cost training resources can support the development of psychomotor skills for surgery through simulation and self-assessment and how the use of Appropedia, an open source platform, is creating a shift in the way training is delivered.

Self-Assessment as a Critical Feature in Surgical Training

One of the distinguishing features of the Global Surgical Training Challenge is the requirement that the training modules include a self-assessment for learners. As part of the ongoing support to the Discovery Award teams, we assembled a panel of international experts for a workshop to help the teams understand the principles of self-assessment. The teams then worked with these experts in small groups to answer questions about this critical feature of their prototypes.

Team Collaboration Across Time Zones

Most collaborative teams will face certain challenges. Our Discovery Award winners are unique in a variety of ways, but one of the most striking is that some of them have never met their team members in person.

The global pandemic severely restricted international travel, but that hasn’t slowed the teams down. Overcoming time zones, language and cultural differences have been just a few of the challenges they have faced.

Last month the teams gathered for a workshop on best practices for team collaboration, including how to cultivate productive conflict.

Learn more about what they learned in our latest blog post.

ALL-SAFE

Ectopic pregnancy,  when a fertilized egg implants and grows outside the main cavity of the uterus, affects approximately two percent of pregnancies around the world. It is the leading cause of maternal death, and a significant contributor to infertility in women. Women in sub-Saharan Africa have an increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, with little or no access to minimally invasive, laparoscopic interventions.

To address this need, the ALL-SAFE (African Laparoscopic Learners - Surgical Advancement For Ectopic pregnancy) team is developing a module to teach all aspects of patient care in the laparoscopic treatment of ectopic pregnancy.

Tibial Fracture Fixation

The tibia, also known as the shinbone, is the larger and stronger of the two bones in the leg below the knee. It connects the knee with the ankle bones. Fractures of the tibial shaft are the most common long-bone fractures in children and adults, affecting approximately 1.3 million patients globally every year.

The team led by a surgeon in Nigeria hopes to address the severe shortage of orthopaedic surgical expertise in low and middle income countries to treat this common injury.
