Our AGM and Annual symposium took place on 9th November (see below) and we welcome our new Section Chairman for the South West Section, Alex Duckworth. We hope to have some events in the Section soon. If you are interested in organising an event in your area, let me know and we can help. These can be social gatherings, factory visits, technical speakers or whatever is of interest to members (within reason!).
No, not Donald Trump, but on the same day that we learned that he had been voted President of the USA, we welcomed Soeren Vonsild as President of the Society of Dairy Technology. Soeren thanked Dr Sean Tuohy for his hard work during his two years of office.
Soeren was the driver behind the Society’s Annual Dinner which is now well established, combining a day symposium and the dinner on the eve of the International Cheese Awards at Nantwich. Soeren aims to widen participation in the Society and this dinner is one way of encouraging engagement. His second key objective is the formation of a system for members to record their CPD activities via the SDT website.
In his address, Soeren said “I am excited about this opportunity to make a difference to the UK Dairy Industry. I see our society as the home for all UK Dairy Professionals and my aim is to make us more relevant and interesting to our members over the next 2 years. In particular I will be reaching out to the Eden students and graduates, as they are representing the skills and commitment that the industry needs for a stronger future.”

Autumn Symposium report
The food safety symposium on Current Tactics in Food Safety was another fascinating event. Our four speakers, Dr Cath Rees, Dr Ken Burgess, Ruth Price and Richard Leathers, presented outstanding papers on Phage, Food Safety and Psychology, Product Recalls and Threat Assessment and these presentations are available in the members section of our website. The website contains lots of useful information and links including, on the front page, a link to the Journal, the IJDT. There is also a specific page under events, for the Spring Conference in Cork (April 10th to 12th 2017) and the Annual Dinner (July 24th 2017). As details emerge they will be posted on here.
The programme for the Spring Conference on April 10th to 12th is taking shape nicely and the theme for the event is "Advances in Nutritional Dairy Products and Ingredients". If you have ever been to an event in Ireland, you will know how good this promises to be. We shall be taking applications for trade stands and if you want to pre-register for the event, email me. There will be a conference dinner and a visit to Teagasc at Moorepark as well as a poster competition for students.
