Top 40 Over 40 of the Week

As the ASID National turns 40 this year, the Wisconsin Chapter is also celebrating our experienced and accomplished members age 40 and over. We'll feature one or more per week, culminating at our Annual Chapter Meeting. Meet...

NAME:  Laura Schalk
YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY: 22 years in the design industry
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT: Forrer Business Interiors
FAVORITE PROJECT: It’s hard to pick just one favorite project. They have all had unique
qualities. The most memorable is the client, early in my career, that was based in Taiwan. I was able to travel to their country and learn about their culture, meet some lovely people, and see many inspiring things. Recently, I had the opportunity to work with a corporate client/ project that allowed me to inspire the client’s employees through a design that promotes positive culture change, enhances collaboration, and help attract and retain outstanding talent.
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR YOUR YOUNGER DESIGNER SELF: Some of the best quotes of wisdom come from life’s lessons and experience.  They are simple but true and for that I borrow from Dr. Seuss. “Be who you are and say what you feel because those who mind don’t matter and those who matter don’t mind.”
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE NOT AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? If I were not an interior designer, I think I would choose to be a museum curator at the Louvre specializing in decorative arts.

NAME:  Pat Algiers
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT:  Chemistry in Place
FAVORITE PROJECT:  My two favorite projects are our two most recent – very different yet very much the same as they were both driven by work process and cultural change: Quarles & Brady LLP in Indianapolis and PKWARE, Inc. in Milwaukee
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR YOUR YOUNGER DESIGNER SELF:  Work hard, play hard (I always worked hard, but I didn’t always play hard.)
WHAT’S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND? Thrive by Arianna Huffington
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE NOT AN INTERIOR DESIGNER? This is a tough question as there are so many things I’d like to do – on the top of my list are: urban planner, sleep scientist, and film script writer.

Use Your Talents To Give Back to Your Community!
Call for Interior Designer Volunteers

The Wisconsin Chapter of ASID is putting out the call to designers for a volunteer opportunity in the Madison Area. The Rape Crisis Center of Dane County is seeking interior designers to provide pro bono design inspiration and concepts for the Center’s Family Room.

The Family Room is the core of the Center – acting as the liaison between victims, their families and law enforcement.  This is a great opportunity to get involved with a community organization doing important work – you can give of your time and expertise to truly make a difference!

If you are interested, please contact for more details.
