STRUT - Call to Entry
Deadline May 29th

Teams will showcase their fashions on the runway FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 18 amidst the lights, music, and festivities of Turner Hall in Milwaukee.  Get excited to celebrate our 5th year of STRUT Wisconsin to a theme of Cirque Carnivale and Color of the Year, Marsala! Proceeds raised will be donated to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Wisconsin.

FINE PRINT
Teams will sign up as a complete group (visit to register) and may consist of members within or outside the design community, professionals or students, but shall be no more than 5 people total including the model and industry collaborator (manufacturer’s rep).  The industry collaborator is an integral part of the team (and may only work with ONE team each), so utilize their product knowledge to help develop the team's vision in the most efficient, economical, and creative manner. The commitment of the industry collaborator (in addition to designing themselves!) is to assist the team with material provisions and solutions.

This year’s theme “Cirque Carnivale’ and event color “Pantone 2015 Color of the Year, Marsala” can be interpreted in any way the team desires (outfit, accessories, hair, makeup). Please note, the Marsala color DOES NOT have to be directly represented with the manufacturer’s product.
Registered teams will receive an information packet in June outlining key parameters, award categories, and a schedule of deadlines. If you are having trouble pairing up with a team (designers or industry collaborators) and would like the STRUT committee to help, please contact us via the email address below.

PARTICIPANT FEE
$250 fee for professional teams (up to 5 members), $125 fee for all student teams (up to 5 members, all members other than industry collaborator must be students or professors).  Payment must be received to finalize team entry and includes one ticket to the event for each team member up to five.

Contact STRUT Committee via or Sara Olm at 608.232.1380.

Top 40 Over 40 of the Week

As the ASID National turns 40 this year, the Wisconsin Chapter is also celebrating our experienced and accomplished members age 40 and over. We'll feature one or more per week, culminating at our Annual Chapter Meeting. Meet...

NAME - Leah A. Knox
YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY  - Do I have to? – okay… 26.
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT - Creative Business Interiors, Milwaukee, WI
FAVORITE PROJECT - My favorite project really started and stopped with a particularly great client.  She was a fantastic project manager for an international project for a Milwaukee-based manufacturing firm, and I worked with her and my project team here at Creative over a few years to realize the project to an extremely successful completion.  It was not necessarily the design elements of the project that made it a favorite, (although I am proud of that aspect), so much as the understanding that our client had of the value of good design in the workplace – she totally “got it” and was truly an advocate of our process and our team in order to develop and implement a complex project.  From the concepts to the construction documents, a client who “gets it” makes it all the more worthwhile!
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR YOUR YOUNGER DESIGNER SELF - Keep learning and stay curious – be open to everything “design” as it will inform your design practice in subtle and profound ways.  And take your profession seriously, but perhaps not yourself TOO much – have fun – after all you are doing what you LOVE and that is a gift!
WHAT’S ON YOUR NIGHTSTAND?  In my bedroom with navy blue walls and bright white built-in bookcases behind the head of the bed, I have dark teal painted wood nightstands.  And on my nightstand I have a stack of books and design magazines that I have great intentions of reading and never seem to get to, a glossy black architect’s lamp from my student days, a framed photo of an architectural ruin, a framed photo of my hubby and me when we first started dating, a lavender sachet to inhale before bedtime (ahh…relax…), a polished silver bird object, and my iPad for playing “pink” noise to go to sleep…

NAME - Karen Johnson
NICKNAME - Thanks to my family, way too many to list!
YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY - 13 years in my 4th career!
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT - I have my own design firm, Karen Lee Johnson Interiors.   I primarily work with residential clients, but have consulted on some small commercial office projects.  I cannot imagine, in the last fifteen years, not having the opportunity to learn and socialize with fellow designers as an ASID member, people who understand the perks and perils of this profession.  As an independent interior designer, I don’t know what I would have done without the professional camaraderie you gain by being a member of this organization.
FAVORITE PROJECT - A lower level residential remodel where the client wanted a nautical theme and allowed me to be as creative as possible.  We designed the bar to look like a Chris Craft boat!
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR YOUR YOUNGER DESIGNER SELF - a) Focus on the journey at hand instead of just the destination; b) The memories you will most remember and cherish are those involving relationships with people, not necessarily project work, places or events; c) Realize that clients really do like what you do for them - they just don’t always tell you.
WHAT ELSE WOULD I DO IF I WERE NOT AN INTERIOR DESIGNER - Since this is my 4th career to-date, I think I would have to say enjoy retirement!  However,  I always wished I had majored in international studies in school, having mastered ten or more different languages to become a governmental interpreter and travel the world!

We have collected 10,810 pounds of material already which puts us half way to our goal, keep the samples coming!
