Beyond Picking Paint Colors...
Uniting to Break Interior Design Stereotypes
The complete lack of understanding as to the value and skill of an Interior Designer was once again demonstrated recently in an article in The Federalist. We suggest you take a look and also read the well-crafted response
from Randy Fiser, CEO of ASID National.
ASID National advocates on behalf of all interior designers for licensure. Without these laws, interior designers are legally subservient to other members of the design team, such as architects and engineers. It is for this reason, that we encourage all members to become a Wisconsin Registered Interior Designer (WRID).
With you as a WRID, we will have a stronger presence and a bigger voice, to advocate for our profession and to accomplish even greater legislative goals that heavily impact our practice.
To clearly outline the importance and the path to professionalism in interior design, we have developed a step-by-step reference on our site. Be in the know. Visit the Path to Professional Status

YEARS IN THE INDUSTRY -
18-design is my second career.
PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT -
Design Manager at M&M Office Interiors
FAVORITE PROJECT -
Vision Forward Children’s Center. All of the children participating in the program were either visually impaired or blind. It was a challenge to design from the perspective of touch vs. sight. The space had to be stimulating for the children texturally and wayfinding was also done through touch. Even presenting to the committee (some of whom were visually impaired) was a challenge because I had to rely on sensory words rather than visual ones. They published a video called Faces of Vision Forward that showed the kids using the space and when I watched it I cried like a baby.
WORDS OF WISDOM FOR YOUR YOUNGER DESIGNER SELF -
Work hard but set boundaries. If you spend two hours answering emails on a Sunday night you won’t be fresh for the work week.
WHAT ARE YOU READING?
I read every day and love contemporary literature and historical fiction with an occasional classic thrown in. I also read a lot of non-fiction related to WWII, the French Revolution and Napoleon Dynasty, and English & Russian History. I’ve also been reading a bit on comparative religions.
WHAT ELSE WOULD YOU DO IF YOU WERE NOT AN INTERIOR DESIGNER?
Definitely a nurse. Specifically a pre and post op nurse. My family has had a lot of surgeries! In my experience, the nurse who is there before and after a procedure is so valuable. They are responsible for getting you ready, playing counselor, being a communicator, and sometimes a shoulder to cry on. I have a huge amount of respect for these professionals and the way they can make a difference during a scary and uncomfortable time for their patients.
NEWS FROM NATIONAL

All entrants will receive exposure to 35+ million people in the Houzz community, and the showcase winners will be awarded great prizes, like $1500 in photography services, a one year ASID membership (if eligible), a free copy of the Evidence-Based Design for Residential Environments publication, and one free ticket to a 2016 ASID National event of their choice (up to $195 value).
