We are delighted that construction of the new Canterbury Precinct officially has begun, complete with a virtual turning of the sod!

The precinct is an $11.7 million initiative as a major infrastructure project for Boroondara Council to co-locate a range of Canterbury community services.

The precinct will involve internal upgrades and heritage restoration works at the former Canterbury Bowling Club pavilion, the Canterbury Maternal and Child Health Centre and the former Canterbury Public Library building next to Canterbury Gardens.

Services in the precinct will include:

  • Canterbury Maternal and Child Health
  • Canterbury Norwood Baptist Kindergarten
  • Playstation Occasional Care
  • Canterbury Toy Library
  • Canterbury Community Garden
  • Interchange Inner East
  • Canterbury Neighbourhood Centre
  • Canterbury History Group, Balwyn and Surrey Hills Historical Societies.

If there has been a silver lining to the challenges we have faced with the COVID pandemic is that many of us have learned new ways to stay connected. This is certainly true for many of our tutors who have embraced new methods and digital applications to enhance their teaching.

When the social restrictions came into place, artist Deb Mawdsley moved her Watercolour classes to a remote format, using a combination of telephone, email and online technology to stay in touch with her students.

"Students send me a photo of what they would like to paint and I put that on my iPad ... we discuss what they need to do over the phone and I can send them images of how to make the colours and even send short videos to help with techniques."

Deb has found the digital art application Procreate on her iPad has many benefits for her teaching as the application enables her to build colour charts for her students and digitally 'paint' to demonstrate colours and techniques.

Although everyone is keen to return to face-to-face classes when its safe to do so, using programs such as Procreate have been a valuable addition to Deb's teaching resources and may continue to be utilised back in the classroom.
