Meet Peter Lam: I am now a U.S. Citizen and Future Voter!

Peter Lam, a violin maker from Hong Kong, is a student of MinKwon's English and Civics class. He was born and raised in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States with the hope that his son will have a better life for himself. Like many immigrants, Peter worked hard to settle down in the United States despite the unfamiliar environment and language barrier. Currently, he owns a handmade violin shop near Lincoln Center.

Several months ago, Peter came to MinKwon to receive help with his citizenship application. Our legal staff completed his application but for Peter, passing his citizenship interview posed a daunting challenge. In order to help him pass his interview, we asked him to join our English and Civics class which is held every Tuesdays at the MinKwon Center. We also had one-on-one sessions with him to fully prepare him for his interview. Finally, all of this effort paid off – Peter passed his citizenship interview on April 17th and attended the Naturalized Oath Ceremony on April 30th!

"I thank all the MinKwon staff who helped me to pass my citizenship interview. Because of MinKwon, I finally became an American citizen. I have been wanting to become a citizen for a long time!" said Peter.
Peter plans on coming to the MinKwon Center to register to vote.  He understand that this is an important right and a privilege as a citizen of the United States.

We congratulate Peter, and we look forward to helping him take the first step as an American to register to vote. We increase civic engagement in Asian American community, one person at a time!
