Securing a safe living space for everyone is the foundation of a thriving community. The MinKwon Center for Community Action focused on defending tenants’ rights in the month of June.
Our activities included filing a lawsuit against the Department of Finance on behalf of SCRIE and DRIE tenants who were on the verge of being wrongfully evicted, launching an anti-displacement initiative, surveying the Flushing community on the Flushing West Rezoning area, and testifying at the Queens Rent Guidelines Board hearing.
MinKwon Advocates for Immigrant Owners and Workers in Passing Historic Nail Salon Legislation
In the months of May and June, the MinKwon Center was heavily involved in advocacy regarding reforms in the nail salon industry. Recently, the New York State Legislature passed bills A. 7630A and S. 05966 after the bills garnered bipartisan support in the last weeks of its legislative session. This legislation will create a new nail specialty certification program that will allow unlicensed workers to continue working while studying for their nail technician license and will authorize the Secretary of State to shut down a business that is operating without a proper business license.
