Food-insecure seniors are more likely to experience depression, heart attack, asthma & congestive heart failure than their food secure peers (Feeding America & National Foundation to End Senior Hunger 2013). Over 16,000 seniors in our area are living without access to affordable, nourishing food. Nearly 40% are living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level (U.S. Census Bureau 2014, Kaiser Family Foundation 2015).
GRuB is excited about a blossoming partnership with Senior Services of the South Sound in a co-written grant that connect more seniors with fresh & nourishing food while increasing the strength & accessibility of our inter-generational programming! Through this partnership, GRuB purchased ergonomic farm tools to assist elders with limited mobility and/or arthritis. We will work to engage seniors as farm volunteers on our Dedicated Inter-generational Gardeners (DIG) team. We're also offering 20 Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) half-shares to seniors through this partnership.
