So you’ve finally made the resolution to get in shape this year. No more excuses, no more joining a gym because it has a rooftop pool and a great juice bar. You’ve taken on the commitment of all commitments: The Marathon
Just telling people that you’ve committed to running 26.2 miles can be intimidating enough, but at some point you’ve actually got to practice running that far. If the thought of pounding the pavement every weekend while your friends are sleeping in makes you miserable, we’ve got good news — you don’t have to do it alone! Lakeshore Sport & Fitness has developed an amazing training program for those planning to run the Chicago marathon this year.
LSF Road Runners
is a group-training program run by coach extraordinaire Kimberly Shah. Running with a group means you’ll get the mental boost of a dozen other runners
practicing alongside you. Sure, one-on-one training is great, but when you’re covering almost 30 miles, you’re going to want the extra support of a team
(and maybe a strong drink at the finish line)! Plus, “even if it is friendly competition, running with other people can help you push yourself beyond your own mental and physical limits,” Kimberly said.
The Road Runner is divided into two sections: Pre-Season and Race Season, and each class has a beginner and intermediate level
. Pre-Season training helps beginning runners build their endurance levels to the point where they can run 6 miles non-stop by April 1. For intermediate runners, it’s designed to help build speed and strength (that is, make you fast and furious!). Once race season arrives, training gets rounded out with suggested group classes
, strength training, and four to five runs per week.
Even if you’re not quite ready to take on the marathon beast, you can still train with LSF. “We have workouts for both marathon runners and accommodate for the shorter distances too,” Kimberly said.
