This first event in the series will provide an opportunity for participants to learn about the health promotion framework and conceptual model currently under development at the Alzheimer Society of Ontario (ASO). This work includes the creation of a toolkit for clients with Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI) to be used by chapter members across the province, as well as formal inventory-taking, gap analysis and capacity building among staff to incorporate in the emerging framework. Following this, we will explore specific approaches and programs available for persons with early stage dementia across Canada.

Presenters: Elaine C. Wiersma (PhD), Associate Professor, Department of Health Sciences at Lakehead University and Lisa Loiselle (MA), Associate Director of Research at Murray Alzheimer Research and Education Program (MAREP)
This event will provide an overview of concepts of self-management in chronic disease prevention and management, and discuss how concepts of self-management can be applied in the dementia context. Self-management, or learning the skills to continue to live healthy and well lives with a chronic condition, has typically been used in chronic conditions that are physical in nature, but not as frequently with dementia or mental health conditions. Self-management approaches for dementia care and research exploring the meanings and perceptions of self-management in the dementia context will be presented.

Individuals living with dementia and their partners in care will present their stories of their dementia journeys. Strategies and approaches that each of them use to continue to live well will be profiled by each presenter, including strategies for memory limitations, enhancing well-being, keeping physically active, advocacy, and being socially engaged.
