Greetings Friends of the Prairie,

Actually, the somewhat rough looking hen Turkey pictured above was last seen in the Prairie a few years ago. For a while, Wild Turkeys were a fairly common sight for residents, some of whom fed them corn. The official 1985 survey of birds, however, does not list them as being residents in the Chiwaukee-Carol Beach area. As new visitors, they were very well behaved and gave many of us a bit of a thrill to see them here. We can only hope they pass this way again.

The mention of "turkey" at this time of year screams Thanksgiving. While we all have much to be thankful for, many of us will be celebrating in a much subdued way with fewer friends and family. However you spend it and with whomever you spend it, be safe. We at the Chiwaukee Prairie Preservation Fund are incredibly thankful for your caring and support of our mission.

October Workday Volunteers
The masked October workday volunteers pictured above are all pointing at the warning sign with a $700 fine for dumping in the Prairie. (Unfortunately, dumping yard waste and tree limbs is a not infrequent event.) Seven of the October volunteers are Prairie Neighbors who live close by. Everyone worked very hard and accomplished a great deal; they cut three and a half truck loads of invasive brush.

This Saturday, November 21, we will be cutting, herbiciding, and hauling woody invasives in an area near the Chiwaukee Cottage. The prediction is cloudy with a chance of showers. Winds N at 10-15 mph and a high of 50 degrees. Wear old clothes and sturdy shoes or boots and bring your gloves. Please wear a mask for the sign-in and instruction time. After that we will physically distance. We supply tools and answers to all your questions about the Prairie.
The workday is from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM. Come for part or all of it.
We will meet on 102nd Street just west of Lakeshore Drive
Please park on the south side of 102nd Street

If you would like to be notified about additional workday opportunities, plant scouting opportunities or plant identification walks, please update your preferences at the end of this email.

Workday cancellations will be posted on our website and Facebook by 8:00 AM on scheduled workdays. If you are unsure whether a workday will take place, please use good judgment when deciding whether to attend.
If you have questions, please email or call 773-515-2772.
