Wake WAKE Up and Read
Most of us are probably familiar with being read to while we were young, and/or reading to the young children in our lives.  Sharing a story while sitting near each other is a special time.  We learn while not even realizing it, we dream and wonder, and even build vocabulary. Christ the King has been helping to make that happen for children in Wake County by donating books to the WAKE Up and Read Program.  During the last donation period, we provided over 750 books!  Actually being able to own a book that can be held, pages turned, and be re-read is key to literacy and development in children.

The mission of WAKE Up and Read is to engage and educate the community about the importance of childhood literacy, as well as increasing access to literary resources and opportunities for all children.  The vision is that every child in Wake County will be inspired, equipped and empowered to read. This is driven by the belief that literacy is the right of every child, as is a high-quality learning experience. This is accomplished through collaborations within the community, such as with CTK. A side benefit is that book drives that put books into the hands of these young readers also build home libraries!

The CTK preschool and the congregation have been joining forces during February to donate books for children from birth to 12 years old to WAKE Up and Read.  Check out the Atrium and the preschool area for information and donation boxes.  Wish lists for appropriate books are available at Quail Ridge Books, Barnes and Noble and Amazon.  Donations are being accepted through February 28th.
