Zika now in Florida: What you need to know


According to reports this week, twenty-one people in Florida have now been infected by the Zika virus by local mosquitoes. At the beginning of the year, FIU convened a panel discussion with university experts in public health, medicine and science to address the disease and its implications. Here are 5 takeaways you need to know on how to prevent transmission, symptoms to look for and what to do if you think you have the virus. <Read>

FIU among 'Great Colleges to Work For' according to The Chronicle of Higher Education

FIU is one of only 68 four-year institutions that achieved the "Great Colleges to Work For" recognition, one of the largest and most respected workplace-recognition programs in the country. A force for the future: Communication professors train local police to connect with citizens

Deaths at the hands of police in recent years have stirred heated debated across the nation concerning police brutality. In response to growing distrust, local police departments are working with FIU's Department of Communication to create programs that facilitate more effective communication between officers and the community. <Read>
On Your Radar
On-campus Housing move-in
First-year and new transfer students living on campus can move-in on Friday, Aug. 19 and Saturday, Aug. 20. Returning residents can move in on Saturday, Aug. 20. Be sure to check in with housing.fiu.edu to confirm your student's move-in dates and times.

Freshman Convocation
If your student is a freshman, don't miss the FIU tradition of Freshman Convocation, Sunday, Aug. 21 at 2 p.m. at the FIU Arena at MMC. All freshman, as well as friends and family, are welcome to attend this ceremony, followed by a party with free food, giveaways and more! <More>

Fall 2016 classes begin
Monday, Aug. 22 is the first day of Fall 2016 classes.


Is your student financially ready for the new academic year?

Financial Aid Awards: Make sure your student has been awarded and has accepted or declined their Financial Aid. They can review awards under the Accept/Decline link on my.fiu.edu.

Enrollment: Financial Aid amounts may be adjusted based on the student's enrollment.

Refunds: If the Financial Aid accepted exceeds the charges (tuition and fees) on your student's account, a refund with the remaining balance will be issued. Students can receive refunds through Direct Deposit.

Purchasing Books: Your student may be eligible to receive a Book Advance out of the Financial Aid accepted.

Academic Calendar: Important Financial Aid dates and deadlines can be found on the school's academic calendar.
SUMMER COMMENCEMENT: In ceremonies on August 7-9, FIU graduated almost 3,800 FIU students, including a military veteran who overcame substance abuse before his path to recovery, where he now wants to help others as a social worker; a former gang member who changed the course of his life through education; and a Iranian woman who came to FIU to earn her Ph.D. in civil engineering. <Read>
