Conference Council Highlights
At the November 3 meeting of the Hawai'i Conference Council, the following were discussed or voted upon:
A fundraising sub-committee, chaired by David Iha, will convene focus groups to determine the feasibility of a major fundraising campaign for the development of local church leaders.
The Audit Committee, chaired by Edwin Fong, will issue a request for proposals from accounting firms for the 2012-13 independent audit.
Appointments to the Conference Missional Teams and Council committees were approved.
The Formation Missional Team, chaired by Aletha Kaohi, was tasked with exploring ministry and outreach possibilities with young adults (ages 18-30).
The Personnel Committee, chaired by Joanne Nakashima, was appointed to be a search committee for an associate conference minister (see the announcement in the People section below).
Thanksgiving Services on O'ahu
Interfaith and Ecumenical Thanksgiving Services are held every year in November at different locations on O'ahu. The schedule for this year’s services is as follows:
East Honolulu Interfaith Communities will host Makahiki: A Season of Thanksgiving and Peace, Sunday, November 18, 6 p.m., at Calvary by the Sea (5339 Kalanianaole Highway, East Honolulu), featuring Joe Camacho. Click HERE for the flyer.
Nu'uanu Valley Interfaith Thanksgiving Service, Tuesday, November 20, 7 p.m., at Honpa Hongwanji Hawaii Betsuin (1727 Pali Highway, Honolulu). Theme for the service is "Spirit of Giving," and Tulsi Gabbard will be the keynote speaker. To view the flyer click HERE.
Windward Coalition of Churches Ecumenical Thanksgiving Service, Wednesday, November 21, 7 p.m., at Christ Church Uniting (1300 Kailua Road, Kailua).
Nominate a Peacemaker
Church of the Crossroads is receiving nominations for its 2013 Peacemaker Award. The award is presented each year at the church’s annual Martin Luther King, Jr., service and celebration, and recognizes a person who has demonstrated a life-time commitment to peace and justice issues in the community. Learn About Senior Living Options
Churches with members interested in learning about senior living options are invited to contact the Arcadia Foundation, part of the Arcadia Family of companies that operates Arcadia and 15 Craigside retirement communities. Arcadia gave a presentation on senior living options to O'ahu clergy in September and is willing to offer the same presentation to interested churches or groups. FACE Honors Teachers
Faith Action for Community Equity (FACE) will honor teachers at this year's interfaith service to be held Tuesday, November 8, 6 p.m. at St. Andrew Episcopal Cathedral (229 Queen Emma Square, Honolulu). The service will include a blessing of the teachers and a short candlelight vigil from the church to the capitol rotunda. To learn more about FACE Hawai'i, click HERE
Crossroads Hosts Watada Lecture Series
The Watada Lecture Series on Peace, Social Justice, and the Environment, sponsored by Church of the Crossroads, will take place November 8 to 11, at the church (1212 University Avenue, Honolulu). Guest speaker this year is Teresia Teaiwa, Senior Lecturer and Program Director of Pacific Studies at Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand. The lecture series also includes an "Alternative Veterans' Day Forum" on November 11 at 1 p.m. Click HERE

Associate Conference Minister Announces Resignation
Dorothy Lester has announced her intention to resign as Associate Conference Minister effective December 31, 2012. Dorothy, with spouse Bob Alpers, will also be resigning as Co-Pastor of Lana'i Union Church on that date. Dorothy and Bob will be relocating to a retirement community in North Carolina in the new year.
Missionary Available to Speak at Churches
John Lunn, former Pastor of Koloa Union Church and now missionary with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, is in Hawai'i between mission assignments until January 1. In Memory: Salau Auelua Saifoloi
Auelua Saifoloi, retired Pastor of Waianae Congregational Christian Church, died October 12 at the age of 82. Service will be held on Thursday, November 8, 11 a.m., at the church located at 86-130 Puhawai Road in Waianae.
