Employers Must Send Healthcare Notices by October 1

The Affordable Care Act requires that employers, including churches, provide written notice to current employees by October 1 of the existence of the Health Insurance Marketplace, which, in Hawai'i, will be called Hawaii Health Connector.  A memo was sent to churches about this requirement.

Cornerstone Fund Offers New Loan Feature

The United Church of Christ Cornerstone Fund, which offers church building loans, has announced that it will now pay up to $1,500 in closing costs on all loans with the exception of revolving lines-of-credit. These costs are specifically to cover all or a portion of the mortgage/deed of trust recording fees and the cost of a mortgagee title insurance policy.

Prepare for Emergencies at Church

FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has developed a resource to assist churches in planning for, preventing, protecting against, mitigating the impact of and recovering from emergencies.  "Guide for Developing High Quality Emergency Operation Plans for Houses of Worship" walks congregations through different emergency scenarios to create a course of action for each and emphasizes planning that involves community partners such as local law enforcement, fire officials, and emergency medical services.

O'ahu Association Offers Polity Course

The O'ahu Association offers a series of courses on UCC polity and history for those seeking UCC ministerial standing.  The next session, “UCC Polity,” will be held at Makiki Christian Church this Saturday, September 28, from 9 a.m. to noon.  Lay members and authorized ministers are welcome to audit the series.  Contact Kyle Lovett at revkyle@hawaii.rr.com for more information.

LEI Project Shares Aloha

The Love Every Individual (LEI) project, sponsored by the youth and young adults of United Church of Christ—Judd Street, aims to collect 1,000 lei for the 1,000 homeless teens served each year by the Hale Kipa Youth Outreach Program.  You can support the project by making non-perishable lei. Community Invited to Celebrate Nonviolence

The Gandhi International Institute for Peace will celebrate the 8th Annual Mahatma Gandhi and International Day of Nonviolence on Wednesday, October 2, 5-6:30 p.m., at the Gandhi Statue near the Honolulu Zoo (at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua Avenues). In Memory: Dee McNabb (Correction)

Retired minister Doris Jean “Dee” McNabb died September 16 at the age of 88.  Ordained in 1998, Dee served at Pu'ula UCC, Central Christian Church, First United Protestant Church, and United Community Church.  Private service will be held.  Condolences may be sent to her family at P.O. Box 17298, Honolulu, HI  96817.
